Why I never, ever get cortisone shots
One of the things that makes me crazy about Big Pharma is how many treatments out there alleviate immediate symptoms and then make the problem worse over time.

Cortisone shots are injections that can help relieve pain and inflammation in a specific area of your body. They’re most commonly injected into joints — such as your ankle, elbow, hip, knee, shoulder, spine or wrist. Even the small joints in your hands or feet might benefit from cortisone shots.
They are used a lot for people who have inflammatory arthritis, but they come with a serious downside.
Those steroids that reduce pain have some known side effects.

In one study steroid injections (IACs) were shown to increase the risk of radiographic osteoarthritis progression (ROA).
IACs, especially continuous IACs, may be associated with an increased risk of knee ROA progression.
Another study showed a similar worsening of outcomes for people who got cortisone injections in their hips.
We found that approximately 7% of patients undergoing steroid hip injection developed RPIA. More advanced patient age, greater joint space narrowing, and more severe osteoarthritis are risk factors for the development of RPIA after intra-articular steroid injection.
This isn’t just one study saying this either.
Here’s another that connects hip injected steroids with a higher need for total hip replacement.
The potential for RDOA and faster progression to THA raises questions about the use of intra-articular steroid injections for hip osteoarthritis and should be discussed with patients. Additional studies are needed to define a true relationship.
Cortisone injections can and do give people nearly immediate relief from inflammatory arthritis pain…
But the problem is that these same shots often speed up the degeneration of the joint, making long term management of the arthritis even more difficult.
Sometimes it just feels like Big Pharma is making people worse on purpose!
If you have inflammatory arthritis and are considering cortisone injections, make sure you weigh the fact that they may cause you to need knee or hip replacement surgery sooner than you anticipated.
