This study was carried out at Nagoya City University, Japan. It was published in the Life Sciences.

The researchers examined the relationship between this vitamin and prolactin secretion in this study.

The very high concentrations of vitamin C in the pituitary gland prompted them to conduct this experiment.

“High concentrations of Ascorbic Acid are found in the pituitary (1), suggesting that Ascorbic Acid has a physiological role in normal hypothalamic pituitary function.”

So, for this experiment, they used a special strain of rats that cannot synthesize their own vitamin C (just like humans).

They fed them a diet devoid of vitamin C.

Then they gave them a treatment that caused them to secrete prolactin.

The findings were interesting…

Compared to the control group, the vitamin C content in the pituitary gland of rats on a vitamin C-deprived diet was severely reduced.

“The hepatic and pituitary content of-AsA in the AsA-deficient rats was remarkably decreased”

there was no difference in plasma prolactin between these two groups before the treatment but…

…the difference became very clear AFTER the treatment.

The vitamin C-deprived rats had MUCH higher plasma prolactin levels after the treatment than the non-deprived rats.

So, vitamin C prevented the surge of prolactin in their bodies from being too high.

“Basal plasma concentrations were similar in the AsA-deficient rats and in the control rats. Intravenous injection of MCP increased plasma PRL levels in both groups of rats, but to a significantly greater degree in the AsA-deficient rats for 5, 15, and 30 minutes after the injection.”

Also, they reported that vitamin C enhances the prolactin-reducing effect of dopamine.

“AsA potentiates the inhibitory effect of dopamine on prolactin (PRL) release from primary cultured rat pituitary cells”

So to summarize, if your diet lacks vitamin C, prolactin can affect you much worse.

Prolactin elevation can be caused by orgasm/ejaculation, stress, calcium deficiency, estrogen excess.

While removing these factors from your life, don’t forget to increase vitamin C.

I prefer natural ways for vitamin C.

You can eat more fruits high in vitamin C such as citrus fruits, kiwi, and strawberries.
