Most people think this food is bad for you — but men living to 100 eat it every day!

What is the one thing that men over 100 all eat everyday?
I spent years visiting Japan, Peru, Italy, Norway, Myanmar, and Russia to meet some of the oldest, healthiest men in the world.
And I’m writing down what all these men eat, what their daily routines are, where they work, and even how often they have sex with their wives.
They all just shrug their shoulders, because it all seems natural to them — they have no idea that people their age are barely walking in the States.
So after a few years, I collect a whole spreadsheet of information about these long-living men…
And it all seemed random — it seemed like there wasn’t any ONE thing that these long-living, sex-having men did differently from you and me…
I mean, these men are not vegetarians. They regularly eat meat, even pork.
They are not physical fitness nuts…
NONE of them work out, and NONE of them do purposeful physical exercise.
They are often smokers…
And they often have sex with much younger women on a daily basis!
Then it hits me… there’s one thing that ALL of these men are eating every day…

3 foods that naturally boost thyroid function in men
The thyroid gland is one of the most important in the body.
It controls the production of thyroid hormones which are essential for energetic metabolism.
Bodily repair and rejuvenation is dependent on energy – the production of which depends on thyroid hormones.
This is why thyroid function affects the health of every part of your body.
Low thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism) cause a great deal of health problems.
Thyroid function can be influenced by numerous environmental factors like diet.
Recently, researchers carried out a study looking at the relationship between food intake and thyroid function.
They found that fruit, protein and saturated fat had positive effects on thyroid hormone production.
The human research was carried out at the Department of Nuclear Medicine, University Hospital Split, Split, Croatia. The findings were published in Nutrition.
The researchers recruited over 4500 healthy individuals for this study.
They took blood samples of all participants which were analyzed for thyroid hormones.
All of the participants also carried out detailed food frequency questionnaires to analyze their diets.
“Dietary intake was assessed for 4585 participants according to data of the completed food frequency questionnaire, containing 58 food items.”
There are 3 basic thyroid labs.
T4 is the storage form of the thyroid hormone. T3 is the activated form of thyroid hormone.
TSH is a pituitary hormone which triggers the thyroid to release more thyroid hormones.
In healthy people, TSH should be in the low normal range and the thyroid hormones should be in the high normal range.
TSH generally goes in the opposite direction of the thyroid hormones.
The study showed that fruit juices lowered TSH and increased thyroid hormones…
…which was not unexpected given the pro-metabolic effect of fruit.
“Frequent consumption of fruit juices negatively affected TSH levels simultaneously had a positive effect on fT4, satisfying the expected pattern of effects.”
(Lower TSH and higher fT4 means better thyroid function.)
What was surprising to the researchers and some people who are reporting on this study is that saturated fat was also associated with better thyroid function.
“We observed a positive effect of frequent consumption of foods rich in saturated fatty acids on thyroid function.”
This is not a surprising effect to me because I am well aware of the pro-metabolic effects of saturated fats like butter, coconut oil etc.
The saturated fats protect against the deleterious effects of polyunsaturated fats like vegetable and fish oils.
These polyunsaturated fats are toxic to the thyroid gland.
Contrary to much of the messaging over the last few decades…
…saturated fats are not the cause of cardiovascular disease but rather they are quite beneficial for your health…
…as exemplified by their positive effect on the thyroid function.
Another finding from this study (which may surprise some people) is the relationship between protein intake and thyroid function.
The researchers found that more frequent consumption of protein was associated with superior thyroid function.
“We observed positive effects of food with high protein concentration on thyroid function.”
Everyone knows that protein is used to build muscle – but it does a lot more than that.
Inadequate protein sends a starvation signal to the body.
This causes the body to decrease metabolism – in order to protect the energy reserves stored in the body.
Protein is also required to activate thyroid hormones in the liver.
As thyroid hormone is the largest factor in controlling the metabolic rate…
…it makes sense that protein intake is positively associated with thyroid function.
At least up to a certain point.
You can eat too much protein and end up suppressing your thyroid – but most people don’t get enough protein.
The study shows a clear association with fruits, saturated fats, and frequent protein intake with better thyroid function.
You should always consult a healthcare practitioner about treating and diagnosing health-related problems.
