What I take to be less stressed and more productive
L-theanine is a protective substance found in tea.
Both tea and coffee have similar amounts of caffeine — a well-known stimulant.
But tea feels much more calming than coffee because it also contains L-theanine to balance out the effect.
A few years ago, researchers in Japan started experimenting with pure L-theanine in doses higher than you would find in a brew.
That research showed that L-theanine can help to lower stress hormones, help with diabetes, accelerate the healing of stomach ulcers, and help calm an anxious mind.
Here we will look at a high quality human trial which shows that L-theanine can reduce psychological stress caused by multitasking — busy work.
Perhaps more importantly it blunts the increase in cortisol — a hormone which when chronically elevated can cause diabetes, obesity and fatty liver disease.
The experiments were carried out at Swinburne University of technology in Australia. The research was published in the journal Nutrients.
There is a lot of research into the psychological effects of L-theanine.
The research shows little effect in folks who have a balanced state of mind but a clear reduction in anxiety in stressed folks.
This research focused on stress caused by multitasking — when you have many things to do at the same time you get stressed by the sheer load of information you are required to hold in your brain.
“This study explored the effects of an L-theanine based nutrient drink on mood responses to a cognitive stressor.”
The researchers recruited 34 healthy participants between the ages of 18 and 40 years old.
“Healthy adults participated in this double-blind, placebo-controlled, balanced crossover study.”
All the participants went through the experiment while given supplemental L-theanine and also on a different day when given an inactive placebo capsule.
Neither the participants nor the researchers knew who was getting L-theanine and who was getting placebo at any given time.
The participants were given a drink which contained 200mg of L-theanine.
This is the standard dose for L-theanine supplementation — but it’s much higher than you would find in a cup of tea, which is about 20mg.
To simulate multitasking work stress, the researchers used computerized testing.
In the testing, the display was split into 4 sections.
The participants had to complete tasks in each of the 4 sections of the monitor simultaneously.
The multitasking work stress periods lasted for 20 minutes — and there were 3 of them during each experiment.
The researchers found that L-theanine significantly reduced feelings of stress when people were put through this demanding test.
“Cognitive stressor was significantly reduced one hour after the administration of L-theanine when compared to placebo.”
The study shows that L-theanine has beneficial effects not only on anxiety, but also on work stress.
The researchers also tested for short-term alterations in one of the most potent stress hormones — cortisol.
When taking L-theanine, the participants had significantly decreased spikes in cortisol caused by work stress.
“The salivary cortisol response to the stressor was reduced to 3 hours post-dose following active treatment.”
That could be a very significant finding — because chronically elevated cortisol can contribute to obesity, type II diabetes, fatty liver disease, and many other ailments common in the modern world.
L-theanine is one of the best ways to blunt acute increases in stress-related cortisol.
Other animal experiments have also shown that L-theanine can help to regulate another stress hormone — serotonin.
L-theanine prevents the increase in stress-related serotonin in the brain — this probably plays a major role in its anti-anxiety effect.
The researchers in this human trial also found increases in brain alpha waves, associated with calm focus, in people who had higher levels of anxiety coming into the experiment.
“Resting state alpha wave activity was significantly greater after L-theanine treatment for those higher in trait anxiety.”
The small amount of L-theanine in one cup of tea can have significant calming effects for some people.
But drinking multiple cups of tea a day to get a higher dose can have negative effects on your thyroid.
I’d avoid more than one cup of tea per day.
And so, for higher doses of L-theanine it’s best to choose a high-quality L-theanine supplement.
“These findings further support the anti-stress effects of L-theanine.”
You should always consult a healthcare practitioner about treating and diagnosing health-related problems.

One sip of this naturally lowers estrogen while boosting testosterone
Believe it or not, most men are producing testosterone just fine on their own.
The problem is something called “aromatization.”
Aromatization is when testosterone gets turned into estrogen in a man’s body.
And that’s the real reason why testosterone levels stay low.
It’s because all the new testosterone you’re producing keeps getting turned into estrogen.
So instead of wasting money on T supplements or patches, tablets, or injections from the doc…
