This one natural supplement lowers harmful levels of cortisol

As indicated recently, l-theanine has potent anti-stress benefits, relieving anxiety, and depression symptoms safely and effectively.

It is an amino acid found primarily in the green tea plant, and has been found to be very safe as a supplement.

Even the daily equivalent of a cup of green tea (15 to 25mg of l-theanine) has been shown to help reverse the effects of stress.

Considering the epidemic of depression, which is hammering a huge proportion of the population, l-theanine is seemingly a key therapeutic substance.

Most people rely on SSRIs (Serotonin Selective Reuptake Inhibitors), which increase the levels of serotonin, ultimately amplifying the stress physiology.

Modern life, with its various stressors, activates the fight or flight response on a constant basis, leading to chronically elevated stress hormones like cortisol.

Stress hormones.

These hormones have a catabolic, deleterious effect on the human body.

They are emergency substances meant to pull us out of difficult situations, but they are not suited for maintaining health.

When the stress state is maintained for weeks, months, years on end, all the important physiological functions are severely impaired.

The things that make life worth living, like:

  • Sexual drive
  • Cognitive function
  • Memory

When the stress hormones are left to constantly wreck havoc, things can only get worse and worse, and leave you visibly aged.

Notably, cortisol breaks down tissues to supply energy during the stress.

Hence, it is catabolic, as opposed to the anabolic nature of testosterone, which helps to build muscles, for instance.

The catabolic actions of cortisol are perfectly fine in the short term (think a few hours or days at the most), but disastrous in the long term.

The anti-cortisol effect of l-theanine.

Avoiding stress is mostly impossible.

The only people who aren’t stressed are dead people.

Moreover, stress is the spice of life, provided it is balanced with periods of rest and tranquility.

If we want to be our best selves, we have to be able to control the excessive cortisol response to the chronic stress in our lives.

While just a cup of green tea was shown to have a potent anti-stress effect…

Researchers have found that 200mg of l-theanine given as a supplement was able to restrain the cortisol response for 3 hours afterwards.

“The primary outcome measure, subjective stress response to a multitasking cognitive stressor, was significantly reduced one hour after administration of the l-theanine drink when compared to placebo. The salivary cortisol response to the stressor was reduced three hours post-dose following active treatment.” – White et al. (2016)

This study showed that the response to a cognitive stressor could be restrained by 200mg of l-theanine.

L-theanine could therefore be a very useful supplement to lower the stress response at night after a long day.

This is important because daily, long-term stress can lead to debilitating mental problems.

Fortunately, there is also evidence that regular use of l-theanine can also alleviate major depression symptoms.

A study evaluated the effects of 250mg/day of l-theanine for middle aged patients with major depressive disorder.

They found that virtually every symptom was ameliorated:

“Our study suggests that chronic (8-week) l-theanine administration is safe and has multiple beneficial effects on depressive symptoms, anxiety, sleep disturbance and cognitive impairments in patients with MDD. However, since this is an open-label study, placebo-controlled studies are required to consolidate the effects.”

More recent studies have confirmed these results (Hidese et al., 2019; Sarris et al., 2019) and clearly indicate that you do not have to suffer needlessly from chronic stress and depression.

L-theanine is safe and effective, and can help alleviate the worse symptoms, and enable you to enjoy your life.
