Semen quality has declined considerably over the last several decades.

And it will probably keep on getting worse, because the trend is clear and worrying. This is a major problem for many men.

Overall semen quality involves many factors, but the foremost aspects are density and volume

The density refers to the concentration of sperm, while volume is a measure of the amount of semen fluid per ejaculation.

Both of these did indeed go down considerably more than 25 years ago, according to a 1992 study.

The authors reviewed 61 papers from 1938-1991 and found a significant decrease in mean sperm count and seminal volume. (Decline from 3.40ml in 1940 to 2.75ml in 1990)

This may not seem like an important concern, but it goes beyond fertility and also reflects real risks related to sexual organs and function, including testicular cancer.

“There has been a genuine decline in semen quality over the past 50 years. As male fertility is to some extent correlated with sperm count the results may reflect an overall reduction in male fertility. The biological significance of these changes is emphasised by a concomitant increase in the incidence of genitourinary abnormalities such as testicular cancer and possibly also cryptorchidism and hypospadias, suggesting a growing impact of factors with serious effects on male gonadal function.” – Carlsen et al. (1992)

Clearly, good semen production is a sign of sexual health, and conversely, insufficient, poor quality semen is a sign that things are not going well down there.

In other words, your testicles are not functioning properly.

Importance of trace minerals

Male sexual function and sperm production are intimately linked to trace minerals.

Micronutrients like zinc, selenium, boron, copper, and many others play a fundamental role in our physiology.

To a degree, we aren’t even close to understanding the full influence of these trace minerals on the organism.

“Human seminal plasma contains a variety of macro and trace elements including magnesium (Mg), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) that have essential roles in normal functioning of semen and its quality. The imbalance of these elements has been reported in several pathologic and male infertility disorders.” – Hashemi et al. (2018)

What we do know is zinc in particular is crucial for adequate sexual function and development.

For example, great quantities of zinc are required for the development of the testicles and penis in teenage boys.

In men of all ages, oysters, the most zinc-rich food on the planet, are culturally known for their aphrodisiac properties.

Protective dietary steps

“Although the picture of the relationship between diet and sperm quality and fertility is far from complete, a number of broad conclusions have emerged. First, increased intake of selenium and zinc (…) have been positively related to sperm quality (…) fish, seafood, shellfish, poultry, and low-fat dairy products have been positively associated with sperm quality.” – Salas-Huetos et al. (2019)

Now, this isn’t to say that trace minerals are the be-all and end-all of sexual function.

However, after decades of rampant soil mineral deficiency and the profoundly inadequate diet of most Western men, it is a fundamental concern.

Better sperm quality and semen production are key indicators of robust sexual function.

Seafood, especially shellfish, is extremely rich in a variety of essential trace minerals like iodine, zinc, copper, and selenium, and is often totally absent from common diets.

Ensuring a generous supply of shellfish and other nutritious foods like good quality dairy and animal products can help provide the necessary micronutrients to optimize sexual function, semen production, and sperm quality.

Hi, I’m Lisa… and this may be un-lady-like to tell you this…

But personally, I LOVE when my husband shoots big loads.

I love when he can fill my mouth and throat up…

…and when there’s so much that it leaks out from me when I stand up…

It tells me I’ve done a really good job at sucking or riding him dry!

And that makes me feel good! LOL

So every week, I whip up a batch of these bite-size snacks — they naturally boost my husband’s testosterone which helps him shoot bigger and bigger loads!
