One thing that I am constantly doing – and you should do it too: I am lowering my iron saturation rate.

Iron builds up in the body as we age.

With higher iron levels, our health declines.

Iron is a potent releaser of free radicals. Our bodies must defend against iron. But that is difficult.

Of course, we do need some iron in our blood and in a few enzymes in our body.

But iron is more dangerous than beneficial.

But when was the last time your doctor encouraged you to lower your iron levels?

And how do you know if your iron levels are high?

This is a tremendously valuable study which was conducted over many years.

These scientists analyzed the results of a very large study that looked at death rates in relation to the saturation level of a blood chemical called transferrin.

(Basically the higher your transferrin, the higher your iron levels.)

They found that:

“All-cause mortality is significantly greater for persons with a serum transferrin saturation of more than 55%, compared with those with saturations below this cutoff…”

Take a look at this chart to see how dramatic this high-iron result really is:

Nobody in this study died directly from high iron. They died from a variety of causes.

But higher iron levels did lead to quicker death.

One big flaw in this study is that they don’t really give you the data showing what happens if your iron saturation rate is, say, 30% or 40%.

The researchers reported finding a dramatic increase in all-cause mortality with a transferrin rate of over 55%.

But that is extremely high. Many men may have a high saturation rate, but not that high.

We can see some good answers in another study:

“…all-cause, cancer, and cardiovascular mortality were inversely associated with transferrin saturation percentage in men.”

Basically, you want your transferrin levels to be as low as possible…

There are two kinds of iron: heme iron and nonheme iron.

Heme iron is bound up in hemoglobin such as is found in red meat.

The body has an efficient way of dealing with heme iron that doesn’t seem to be too harmful.

(By the way, red meat has both heme and nonheme iron in it.)

However, the worst form of iron is the stuff that has been added to food as “reduced iron.”

It’s in most baked goods.

It’s entirely possible that the reduced iron that is added to baked goods under government edict is what makes baked goods so harmful – rather than the gluten.

You will find huge amounts of reduced iron in all baked goods.

The only exception seems to be certain baked goods made from organic flour.

Some organic flours have reduced iron added and some don’t.

I always read the labels – if something has reduced iron, I do not use it.
