This 1 food can increase men’s risk of skin cancer by 20%
Not long ago I did a lot of research into the causes of skin cancer.
One of the things I found was that polyunsaturated fats are a major trigger for this disease.
Polyunsaturated fats are highly unstable lipids which are found in large amounts in vegetable oils and fish oils.
The research on skin cancer mostly implicates polyunsaturated fats from vegetable oils as having a causal role in the disease.
But these fats have very similar effects to those found in fish oils – and I did wonder about the potential effect of fish oil on skin cancer.
Well, newly published research seems to back up my suspicions…
An analysis of a massive amount of human data seems to show that eating fish can increase the risk of skin cancer by more than 20%.
The human research was carried out at Brown School of Public Health in Providence. The paper was published in Cancer Causes and Control.
Previous studies looking at this question were rather small, and so the results of those studies were inconsistent.
“Prior epidemiological studies evaluating the association between fish intake and melanoma risk have been few and inconsistent.”
The researchers wanted to provide an analysis that used a lot more data and also looked at differences in skin cancer risk between types of fish consumed.
“Few studies distinguished different types of fish intake with risk of melanoma.”
The researchers were able to get a hold of high quality data on almost half a million people.
The data included food frequency questionnaires which analyzed diet and all health records.
“We examined the associations between intake of total fish and specific types of fish and risk of melanoma among 490,000 participants.”
There were over 6 million person years of data available for the research. Over 5,000 cases of melanoma turned up over that time period.
“During 6,600,000 person-years of follow-up with a median of 15 years, 5,034 cases of malignant melanoma and 3,284 cases of melanoma in situ were identified.”
Those who consumed the most fish had a 22% higher rate of malignant melanoma compared to those who ate the least amount of fish.
“There was a positive association between higher total fish intake and risk of malignant melanoma (HR = 1.22 for top vs. bottom quintiles).”
The researchers also looked at melanoma in situ.
This is a growth of abnormal cells which is limited to the very top layer of skin.
It’s considered precancerous.
People who consumed the most amount of fish were almost 30% more likely to have precancerous melanoma in situ.
“There was a positive association between higher total fish intake and risk of melanoma in situ (HR = 1.28 for top vs. bottom quintiles).”
The researchers looked at a number of different factors which can affect the risk of this type of skin cancer…
But none of them could explain the differences in skin cancer rates according to fish consumption.
“The positive associations were consistent across several demographic and lifestyle factors.”
The study shows a clear and relatively strong relationship between eating large amounts of fish…
…and the risk of developing skin cancer over the next 10-15 years.
“We found that higher total fish intake, tuna intake, and non-fried fish intake were positively associated with risk of both malignant melanoma and melanoma in situ.”
There could be any number of things that could explain this.
But I believe that the large amounts of polyunsaturated fats contained in many fish could be the culprit…
Because we already know that polyunsaturated fats from vegetable oils are a massive trigger for skin cancers.
“Future studies are needed to investigate the potential biological mechanisms underlying these associations.”
This is one of the reasons I recommend staying away from vegetable oils, fish oils, and excessive consumption of fatty fish.
