Study: Many men aren’t using enough salt

There has been an assault on dietary salt for several decades.

According to many experts and nutritionists, it should be avoided, and several “low-salt” diets have been promoted since the 1970s.

But this is clearly a reductionist perspective.

Populations around central to east asia have been known to eat 10 to 30 grams of salt per day, if not more, with no side effects.

Salt plays several fundamental roles in human physiology, and this is overlooked most of the time.

For instance, it’s profoundly anti-stress.

For example, a salty snack before bed can often help increase the quality of sleep.

It also increases metabolism and thus heat-production:

“On the seventh day (of salt supplementation) a rise in basal metabolism, a feeling of warmth, good appetite and energetic feeling in the body appeared.’’ – Ogata et al. (1952)

As is known from the works of Broda Barnes and Ray Peat, among others…

A high rate of metabolism, as indicated by warm body temperature, is a sign of robust health and general resistance to stress.

Salt also appears to affect levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter which is closely associated with lower metabolic rates and stress.

Serotonin tends to cause hypoglycemia, and hypoglycemia inhibits the conversion of thyroxine into the active T3 hormone. Hypoglycemia and hypothyroidism increase noradrenaline, and autistic people have been found to have more noradrenaline than normal. – Ray Peat (2012)

Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and low levels of the active thyroid hormone (T3) are clear factors in people with suppressed metabolism.

A 1993 study showed the effect of dietary salt restriction in healthy male volunteers:

“During the low-salt diet, 24-h urinary excretion of serotonin increased by 42%, accompanied by a 52% rise in the excretion of 5-HIAA. Salt restriction also increased noradrenaline excretion by 77%’’

“Salt restriction stimulates the serotonergic system in man. Stimulation of this system, in conjunction with the sympathetic nervous system, may contribute to renal sodium conservation during dietary salt restriction in man.’’ – Sharma et al. (1993)

It may be confusing for many people, but serotonin is not something which we want to increase.

Decades of use of SSRI treatments (which increase serotonin levels) for mental disorders have been an abject failure.

Instead, serotonin levels need to be controlled, while the emphasis should be on healthy metabolism and thyroid function.

Not restricting salt in one’s diet is a basic, but fundamental step anybody can take.
