So a high metabolism is essential for optimal health and vitality.

Enter low-carbohydrate diets…

Low-carb diets are very popular these days

Many people find that they help with weight loss.

While low-carb diets can help with weight loss in the short term, in the end they cause more problems than they solve.

Animal experiments have shown that low-carb diets decrease the metabolic rate. 

And if you talk to enough long-term low-carbers, you will know that the same is true in humans!

These experiments took place at the School of Biological Sciences, University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. The American Journal of Physiology published the results.

Low-carb (keto) diets can help some people to lose a little bit of weight quickly.

But over the long term, the results don’t look so good.

“Long-term studies have found that low-carbohydrate diets are more effective for weight loss than calorie-restricted diets in the short term – but equally or only marginally more effective in the long term.”

One reason for the initial, rapid weight-loss phase of low-carb diets is the loss of stored sugar (glycogen).

Carbohydrates are broken down into sugars – which in turn can be stored as glycogen and used later.

Glycogen is stored in the liver and muscles… And this can be as much as 20 ounces of sugar. 

But this sugar is also attached to significantly more weight in water

So this water+sugar loss can see people losing 5-6 pounds in a couple of days. 

Sure, it looks good on the scales. But that’s not the kind of weight we want to lose.

The problems start later…

“Low-carbohydrate diets have been linked to reduced glycogen stores and increased feelings of fatigue.”

Fatigue -> low energy -> low metabolic rate…

Promoters of low-carb/keto diets are struggling to explain the diminishing returns of these diets over time… 

Because the long-term research doesn’t fit with their theories.

The authors of this study supposed that the diminishing returns from a low-carb diet might be explained by reduced physical activity.

“We propose that reduced physical activity in response to lowered glycogen explains the diminishing weight loss advantage of low-carbohydrate compared with low-calorie diets over longer time periods.”

Do people on low-carb diets move less and so burn fewer calories over time?

They set out to test that theory.

These initial experiments were carried out on the smallest animals in the lab, Drosophila melanogaster – the fruit fly.

The researchers put adult fruit flies on a low-carb diet for nine days. This is a long time for these short-lived animals.

They looked at changes in stored sugar (glycogen). 

They also recorded the activity levels of the animals.

And they measured changes in body weight

Most importantly, the researchers tracked the metabolic rate of the low-carb fruit flies.

“We explored this possibility by feeding adult fruit flies a standard or a low-carbohydrate diet for 9 days and measured changes in metabolic rate, glycogen stores, activity, and body mass.”

The researchers expected that the low-carb diet would lead to less activity in the animals.

“We hypothesized that a low-carbohydrate diet would cause a reduction in physical activity.”

They were wrong.

“Physical activity was unaffected by diet.”

The researchers also expected that the low-carb diet would increase the metabolic rate of the animals. Wrong!

“Metabolic rate was reduced in the low-carbohydrate group.”

The low-carbohydrate diet led to a decrease in metabolism, a decrease in energy, a decrease in the ability to recover from the stresses of life.

Most animals have a certain requirement for sugar. 

Both sugar and fat can be used by the body, but some cells have a necessity for sugar.

When you restrict carbohydrate/sugar, the body perceives it as starvation (regardless of other calories).

In order to protect the parts of the body that require sugar, the body slows down its metabolic rate…

This allows the available sugar to last longer – so the animal can live longer.

(And men who want healthy semen loads will want to consume plenty of sugar — semen is high in fructose, an important type of sugar.)

The title of the research paper summarizes the problems with low-carbohydrate diets quite well… 

Low-carb diets induce metabolic depression in order to spare the limited supply of sugar.
