Why is it so hard to lose fat once you’ve gained the fat?
The answer to this question has spawned several (very dangerous) Big Pharma “treatments”…(but I’ll tell you the GOOD news in a bit…)
The weight loss industry teaches everything from eating high-fat diets to eating nothing but grapefruit.
But, like most things, the problem of gain and loss is more complicated than it seems on the surface.
Because, even when you do lose fat, if you don’t do it right you’ll lower your metabolism…
AND you’ll gain the fat all back again…plus more besides.
Ugh…
But, fortunately, this study gives us an insight into what goes on in our mouths when our bodies pack on the pounds… And what we can REALLY do about it.
And that can lead us to a better idea of how to lose weight and keep it off.
The negative downward spiral of weight gain and inflammation…
I’m sure if you’ve read anything I’ve written or taken any of my courses, you’ve probably heard me talk about internal inflammation.
You’re not likely to hear about internal inflammation from your doctor – no matter how many degrees they have (unless they’re very special).
That’s because they are not taught about it in medical school.
Doctors are mostly taught to give out stuff made by Big Pharma.
Treating the underlying causes of issues like weight gain just isn’t on the radar.

But it turns out that internal inflammation is a huge driver of getting more and more fat.
Your body has this mechanism where obesity leads to internal inflammation…
…And then internal inflammation creates a cascading effect where your sense of taste gets weaker.
How this works is incredibly interesting, and it points us to a way to lose weight that helps your body keep it off for good.
Obesity causes your body to produce fewer taste buds.
“Inflammation, driven by obesity, actually reduces the number of taste buds on the tongues of mice.”
In this experiment, scientists fed one group of mice regular feed and the other group of mice an extremely high-fat diet.
“To explore changes in taste buds in obesity, the authors fed mice either a normal diet made up of 14% fat, or an obesogenic diet containing 58% fat. Perhaps unsurprisingly, after 8 weeks the mice fed the obesogenic diet weigh about one-third more than those receiving normal chow.”
Of course, the mice being fed a high-fat diet gained a whole bunch of weight.
But another interesting thing happened as well…
That high-fat diet is really the culprit in reducing your ability to taste as you gain weight.
“But strikingly, the obese mice had about 25% fewer taste buds than the lean mice, with no change in the average size or the distribution of the three cell types within individual buds.”
Scientists think this happens because of the inflammatory response that the high-fat diet creates in the body.
The high-fat diet disrupts the signals that go between the cells and causes inflammation.
Then the inflammation causes weight gain.
“Obesity is known to be associated with a chronic state of low-grade inflammation…and adipose tissue produces pro-inflammatory cytokines – molecules that serve as signals between cells – including one called TNF-alpha (tumor necrosis factor alpha).”
Because of this disruption, the body actually produces fewer taste buds in response to the inflammation. And that seems kind of crazy.
It shows just how damaging the inflammatory response in your body can be.
“The authors found that the high-fat diet increased the level of TNF-alpha (tumor necrosis factor alpha) surrounding the taste buds.”
And this is why I am not a big fan of the low-carb, high-fat diet fads (like Paleo).
I think these diets are very damaging, partially because high-fat diets cause the inflammation response.
When an inflammatory response starts in your body, it causes all kinds of terribly negative effects.
Including many chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and even Alzheimer’s.
So it’s important to keep the inflammation response in your body down.
To start dropping pounds and gaining back your health, one thing you can do is lower your fat intake dramatically.
Just be careful not to skip meals or eat “frankenfoods” such as no-fat sour cream (what is that stuff anyway?).
A low-fat eating plan can short circuit the internal inflammation caused by a high-fat diet.
By doing this you can reduce the inflammation in your body, and probably help your taste buds develop again…
And you’ll prevent many other chronic illnesses too.
