This lowers cortisol while boosting healthy T
Stress is something that we all have to deal with every day.
It can be caused by psychological factors, lack of sleep, what you eat, treatments, and so on….
The causes of stress are multifactorial, but the effects on the body are always the same.
In humans, the main stress hormone is cortisol.
Psychological stress, lack of sleep, what you eat, and certain treatments increase cortisol.
And cortisol activates the glucocorticoid receptors.
The harmful effects of excess cortisol are too many to mention…
But they include weight gain, low testosterone, depression, muscle loss, and insomnia.
Bi Pharma is now working on treatments to block these glucocorticoid receptors…
But things like testosterone and vitamin D also block these receptors and the degenerative effects of stress hormones.
The animal experiments were carried out at Université de Liège in Belgium. The paper was published in The Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
Anabolic substances are substances which trigger growth. When looking at muscles, anabolics increase muscle mass.
Catabolic substances have the opposite effect – they trigger the breakdown of muscle or other tissues.
Many “anabolic steroids” like testosterone and trenbolone also have anti-catabolic effects.
So they help to build muscle and prevent the breakdown of muscle.
The authors of this study were interested in finding out whether some of these effects were due to interactions with the glucocorticoid receptor…
The receptor which is activated by cortisol in humans.
Cortisol is known to be extremely catabolic – it causes muscle wasting and the breakdown of other tissues in the body.
The researchers looked not only at the effects on the glucocorticoid receptor, but also on the androgen receptor…
…the cell receptor most known for being affected by androgenic hormones like testosterone and trenbolone.
“The activity of the androgenic steroids testosterone and trenbolone was studied in rats. We also studied these androgens as antagonists that oppose the catabolic effects of glucocorticoids via glucocorticoid receptors.”
The researchers compared the effects of these hormones against an experimental treatment.
This experimental treatment was designed specifically to block the glucocorticoid receptor (a treatment called RU486).
“For comparison, the effects of the potent glucocorticoid antagonist RU486 were also examined.”
One way to test the anti cortisol effect of these substances is to look at an enzyme in the liver called tyrosine aminotransferase.
When the glucocorticoid receptors are blocked, liver tyrosine aminotransferase decreases.
That experiment showed that testosterone was an effective cortisol blocking substance by blocking the cortisol receptor.
“Testosterone and RU486 behaved as anti-glucocorticoids in vivo since they inhibited glucocorticoid-induced liver tyrosine aminotransferase activity.”
The research shows that testosterone and other similar hormones have potent effects on glucocorticoid receptors.
Testosterone prevents excessive muscle breakdown by blocking the effects of cortisol.
“The results suggest that anabolic steroids can act via muscle glucocorticoid receptors, thereby antagonizing the catabolic activity of endogenous glucocorticoids, rather than via muscle androgen receptors.”
The research has wider implications aside from simply showing us that testosterone prevents muscle loss by interacting with the cortisol receptor.
These receptors are involved in far more than just muscle maintenance. I recently reported on some experiments which showed that vitamin D also blocks the glucocorticoid receptor.
That research indicates that the antidepressant effect of vitamin D is due to its effect on these receptors.
These receptors are also major players in metabolic diseases like obesity and type II diabetes.
You will probably be hearing a lot about glucocorticoid receptor-blocking treatments in the coming years…
But remember that testosterone and vitamin D have similar effects.
