More potent than testosterone
DHT is a male hormone. It’s like a more potent version of testosterone.
DHT has gotten a lot of bad press. It has been blamed for hair loss and prostate problems.
But it’s pretty clear by now that DHT causes neither of these.
In fact, DHT, like testosterone, is a protective and restorative hormone.
For example, experiments have shown that animals which have been burned extensively, recover much more rapidly and to a greater extent when given supplemental DHT.
The ability to recover from injury like this is a great indicator of youth.
Because younger animals display a much greater ability to heal.
The animal experiments were carried out at the University of Sydney Australia. The paper was published in The International Journal of Molecular Sciences.
DHT belongs to a category of hormones called androgens – these are hormones which are primarily known for the masculinizing effects.
But these hormones also have other actions — and researchers have been using synthetic hormones to try to aid regeneration.
Synthetic androgens, similar to natural DHT, have been shown to accelerate recovery from injury.

The researchers at the University of Sydney were curious whether the real thing could have the same effect.
So they created some experiments testing the effect of DHT on burn healing in lab animals.
“The aim of this study is to investigate the role of DHT as a new therapeutic approach in treating major burn injury.”
A number of different groups of mice were exposed to major burns over large areas of the body.
Afterwards some of the mice were treated with the hormone DHT.
The rest of the mice were not given treatment and the researchers compared recovery in the two groups.
“In the present study, mice received systemic androgen treatment post major burn injury. Wound healing rate and body weight were monitored over 21 days.”
When animals suffer significant burns they tend to lose a lot of weight.
DHT treatment prevented much of the weight loss in the burned animals.
“DHT treated mice lost less weight.”
DHT accelerated healing.
“DHT treated mice displayed accelerated wound healing.”
After an injury, like impacts, cuts or burns, there is a massive increase in inflammation.
Inflammation is good in the short term. But in major injuries inflammation tends to linger too long.
In the later stages of healing, inflammation is actually a problem.
“Mice, after burn injury, displayed acute systemic inflammatory responses over 21 days.”
DHT treatment helped to lower inflammation in the later stages of healing.
“DHT treatment shortened the systemic inflammatory response.”
This anti-inflammatory effect is probably a major reason why animals giving DHT recovered faster and more fully.
“DHT treatment facilitates local wound healing by accelerating the resolution of inflammation.”
Changes in hormones over time are major factors in aging.
Younger guys recover more quickly because they have higher levels of protective hormones like DHT.
Hormonal changes are not simply determined by age.
