Taurine is an extremely important amino acid.

But I doubt your doctor has told you that you need to take more taurine.

He should.

So, what is taurine good for?

Well, as men get older, it is common that they get injuries more frequently than when they were younger.

Many of these injuries come from the gym, running, or just even walking.

And many come from daily activities that shouldn’t cause injury at all.

It may be that men are suffering from low taurine.

In this study, they found that depleting the tissues of taurine reduces your ability to exercise.

And it may affect all the muscles — including your heart muscle.

In this study, they genetically engineered some mice not to be able to process taurine.

Then they gave these mice intense exercise.

After that, they the exercised mice with a control group of mice that had a normal taurine metabolism.

They found, interestingly enough, that:

Taurine depletion is also associated with muscle cramping and exercise-induced muscle injury.

If your taurine is low, lactic acid builds up quickly in your muscle and other tissues.

Lactic acid can inhibit adequate respiration in your cells and can prevent your cells from metabolizing energy.

Plasma lactate was significantly increased in low taurine mice.

A similar effect is seen in the taurine deficient, beating heart.

The effect of low taurine levels and exercise are quite bad:

Taurine depletion in skeletal muscle impairs the regulatory mechanisms that are activated during exercise. The muscle begins to atrophy.

With a balanced diet, it is difficult to be low in taurine unless you follow a vegetarian diet.

However, it is also quite possible that many men are eating a poor diet — and are not getting enough taurine.

Here’s a chart showing how much taurine common foods contain.

My favorite source of taurine is seafood such as wild shrimp.

I never eat farm shrimp because I think it’s disgusting.

But if you eat about 4 ounces of shrimp, you get 200 mg of good quality taurine.

Supplementing may be useful so you can reap the taurine health benefits.

But I wouldn’t go more than 1000 or 2000 mg per day.

Taurine supplements can make you feel tired and cause heartburn if you’re not used to it.

The Red Bull Original Blue can includes 1000 milligrams of taurine in each can.

Read the label. It can be a useful way to consume a bit of extra taurine.
