Is good cholesterol actually good for you?
In the last few decades, we have been told to do anything we can to increase levels of HDL cholesterol.
It has even become known as “good” cholesterol.
But things are not that simple…
While HDL cholesterol does have beneficial effects in the body, elevated levels of HDL are a bad sign.
One of the main functions of HDL is to remove toxins from the body by shuttling them to the liver.
Some people have very low levels of HDL and this can mean they are unable to detoxify the body properly – bad.
But other people have very high levels of HDL because they have lots of toxins in the body – also bad.
These facts confuse researchers who have bought into the simplified and unscientific ideas about HDL.
This human research was carried out at Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark. The findings were published in the European Heart Journal.
The research was investigating reports that high levels of “good” HDL cholesterol could be associated with increased risk of death.
“We tested the hypothesis that extreme high concentrations of HDL cholesterol are associated with high all-cause mortality in men and women.”
The researchers analyzed data from over 50,000 men and over 60,000 women taking part in large-scale research in Denmark.
They had a massive amount of data in the study – almost 750,000 person-years – an average of 7 years tracking for each person in the study.
The researchers looked at data from blood tests which measured HDL cholesterol and compared that against deaths in the group.
The researchers found a U-shaped curve relationship for HDL cholesterol and death.
This means that people with very low HDL and people with very high HDL were much more likely to die.
“The association between HDL and all-cause mortality was U-shaped, with both extreme high and extreme low concentrations being associated with high all-cause mortality risk.”
People with very low HDL cholesterol may not be able to deal with the toxins which this type of cholesterol is set up to handle.
Those with very high HDL cholesterol may have problems with toxins which are too great to be managed by HDL.
People are often advised to get HDL levels above 60 mg/dL – with higher being better.
But people with levels just a little above this range had the lowest chance of dying.
Increasing HDL further was associated with an increased risk of death.
“The concentration of HDL cholesterol associated with the lowest all-cause mortality was 73 mg/dL in men and 93 mg/dL in women.”
Then with cholesterol levels above 97 to 116 mmol/l were 36% more likely to die.
Men with HDL cholesterol levels above 116 were twice as likely to die.
The researchers found similar risks in women.
“Men and women in the general population with extremely high LDL cholesterol paradoxically have high all-cause mortality.”
People have been told to do anything they can to elevate their HDL cholesterol – the higher the better.
But the research clearly shows that this assumption is wrong.
People have been told to eat fatty fish and avocado in order to boost HDL levels to live longer.
But these foods contain unhealthy fats and though they do elevate HDL, this could dramatically shorten your lifespan.
HDL cholesterol is a detoxifying agent.
We need a little to keep your body clean of toxins which can cause disease.
But if we have very high HDL cholesterol, it can be a sign that we are very toxic in a way that HDL cannot handle.
Much of this toxic material comes from the gut…
