No, it’s not in your head… not in your “second head”… but it’s just around the corner.

Important Thanksgiving health technique – use it tonight

An important technique for the holidays – remember that over 1 in 10 men worldwide deal with either inflammatory bowel disease or irritable bowel syndrome.

And it sucks! Especially around the holidays…

I talk about chronic inflammation all the time and what a huge problem it is for people’s health.

That’s because chronic inflammation is the root cause of most long-term health conditions.

Things as varied as high blood pressure and Alzheimer’s are caused by internal inflammation.

So are inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome.

According to the Mayo Clinic:

“Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an umbrella term used to describe disorders that involve chronic inflammation of your digestive tract.”

The two major types of IBD are ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.

They are debilitating conditions and extremely difficult to deal with.

Understanding the causes of internal inflammation is critical to preventing and treating disease…

We’re entering an interesting era in medicine.

Up until now, most approaches to treatment have been pretty broad or “systemic.”

That means they affect your entire body.

For instance, Advil doesn’t just dull the specific pain you are trying to kill at the moment…

[cmamad id=”19178″ align=”center” tabid=”display-desktop” mobid=”display-desktop” stg=””]

It affects your entire body when you take it.

However, new research is promising to give us more targeted treatments for medical issues…

And it may also help us learn how to prevent serious medical problems.

In this case, scientists have identified a key reason why guts get inflamed in the first place.

“Michigan State University scientists have identified an early cause of intestinal inflammation…”

Your body’s second brain…

I remember reading about how octopuses have distributed brains – their limbs have neurons.

And I was fascinated by that.

It turns out that having a second brain isn’t exclusive to just the octopus.

Humans have a second brain too – in our gut – where we have a huge number of neurons.

According to Brian Gulbransen, MSU neuroscientist:

The gut has its own brain and that has more neurons in the intestines than in the spinal cord. Within your intestines lies a ‘second brain’ called the enteric nervous system…”

It seems a little weird, but the gut actually has its own brain that controls most of the function of your bowels.

Brian Gulbransen again:

“The gut has its own brain and that has more neurons in the intestines than in the spinal cord. Within your intestines lies a ‘second brain’ called the enteric nervous system.”

This second brain can get its wires crossed and send signals through glial cells that amplify inflammation.

“Gulbransen’s team revealed that glial cells, once thought to be supporting cells, are active signaling cells involved in much of the cross-talk that happens in the gut.”

So, sometimes when you get initial gut inflammation and experience bowel problems, the glial cells stay angry.

And that makes your entire digestive system more sensitive.

Post-inflammation, there are still many angry glial cells. Because they’ve amped up their signaling, they make you, and your gut, more sensitive.”

Scientists hope they can calm down the angry glia after a bout of gut inflammation and reduce the long-term sensitivity of the gut in patients who suffer from IBD.

We hope we can turn them back to happy glia, reduce the sensitivity, and return gut function to normal.”

They are looking at drugs to do this.

Of course, that’s not a surprise – that’s where the money is.

But, you know me – I’m not a big fan of Big Pharma interventions when there are other options.

“By blocking the receptor with GR 159897, which is a known NK2 receptor antagonist drug, it disconnected the signaling between neurons and glia… It proved to be quite effective in accelerating recovery from inflammation.”

(NK2 is Tachykinin receptor 2… Tachykinin is a neuropeptide that rapidly induces contraction of gut tissue.)

Reducing inflammation naturally…

There are a whole bunch of ways to naturally reduce gut inflammation, but one will have a huge impact:

Get rid of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in your diet.

These are in most processed foods as well as corn oil, canola oil, soy oil, and vegetable oils.

These oils are marketed as healthy.

But, really, they are actually farm waste!

And they are a NIGHTMARE for your health because they cause gut inflammation.

Just getting them out of your world and replacing with moderate amounts of coconut oil and butter can really, really help.

If you suffer from inflammatory bowel conditions, reducing overall internal inflammation can really help.
