How to use testosterone to get rid of unhealthy body fat

Most guys know that testosterone is important for motivation, libido, strength, and muscle mass.

But testosterone is not just a masculine hormone. It’s also centrally involved in energetic metabolism.

For men, the role of testosterone in energetic metabolism is second only to thyroid hormone.

For men with low testosterone, research shows that improving testosterone levels is probably the most effective way (after fixing thyroid) to lose weight in the long term.

Optimizing testosterone also improves factors of the metabolic syndrome – reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The review of existing human research was carried out at Boston University. The paper was published in Current Opinion in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Obesity.

The study looked at 2 aspects of this problem.

First, researchers looked at the effect of supplementary testosterone and metabolic health in overweight and obese men with low testosterone.

The researchers also looked at the relationship between low testosterone, muscle mass, body fat, and the ability to sustain weight loss

“We examined the data linking testosterone therapy in overweight and obese men with testosterone deficiency to increased lean body mass, decreased fat mass, improvement in overall body composition and sustained weight loss.”

The researchers looked at a lot of the best human experiments done over the last few years.

The question is of great importance because we know that there is a strong link between low testosterone and obesity.

“This is of paramount importance because testosterone therapy in obese men with testosterone deficiency represents a novel and a timely therapeutic strategy for managing obesity in men with testosterone deficiency.”

The best human research shows that supplemental testosterone helps with maintaining weight loss in men with low T.

It’s more effective in the long term than alternatives like bariatric surgery (which can cause problematic unwanted side effects).

“Long-term testosterone therapy in men with testosterone deficiency produces significant and sustained weight loss.”

Waist measurement is one of the most accurate predictors of major health problems.

Men with larger waists have a much greater risk of major cardio metabolic problems.

Supplemental testosterone in men with low T reduces waist size, helps to shred body fat, and increases lean mass (muscle and bone).

“Testosterone therapy in men with testosterone deficiency produces a reduction in waist circumference and BMI and improvement in body composition.”

Testosterone also improves the metabolic syndrome in men with low T.

Metabolic syndrome includes high blood sugar, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, a large waist, and abnormal cholesterol readings.

“Further, testosterone therapy ameliorates components of the metabolic syndrome.”

Perhaps one of the most important things we’ve learned about testosterone in recent years is that it affects the mitochondria.

The mitochondria are the energy producing engines inside the cells.

Improvement in mitochondrial function shows that testosterone is far more than just a “male” hormone.

Testosterone is a metabolic hormone.

“The aforementioned improvements are attributed to improved mitochondrial function and increased energy utilization.”

As you might expect with these energetic and body composition improvements…

Optimizing testosterone levels improves motivation and activity levels.

“Metabolic improvements are also attributed to increased motivation and vigor resulting in improved cardio-metabolic function and enhanced physical activity.

For men with low testosterone, improving testosterone levels is one of the most important things to do to improve metabolic health – second only to thyroid.

(As I have written elsewhere, oftentimes men with low testosterone have a thyroid problem which can actually be fixed by addressing the thyroid issue – always look at thyroid first.)

“The implication of testosterone therapy in management of obesity in men with testosterone deficiency is of paramount clinical significance, as it produces sustained weight loss without recidivism.”

There are pitfalls with supplemental testosterone. Many times improving testosterone levels indirectly is enough.

But for some men, long term testosterone supplementation can be the real key to fixing metabolic issues.

“These findings represent strong foundations for testosterone therapy in obese men with testosterone deficiency and should spur clinical research for better understanding of the usefulness of testosterone therapy in treatment of underlying pathophysiological conditions of obesity.”

You should always consult your healthcare practitioner for guidance on medical diagnosis and treatment.
