Have you tried Xiao Yao San yet?
This recent study looked at the effect of a Chinese herbal remedy on depression.
The remedy decreased depressive behaviors and improved multiple biochemical markers of depression.
The researchers carried out these animal experiments at the Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, China. They published their results in the Journal of Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
Xiao Yao San is an herbal remedy that the Chinese use to treat depression and other psychological disorders.
“Xiao Yao San is a classical Chinese medicine formula that has been widely used to treat mood disorders for hundreds of years.”
These researchers set this study up to test the effects of Xiao Yao San on depressive behaviors in rats.
Scientists can create depressive behaviors in animals – they isolate them and expose them to different types of stress.
“The procedure involves food deprivation, cage tilt, soiled cage, forced swimming etc.”
[cmamad id=”20871″ align=”center” tabid=”display-desktop” mobid=”display-desktop” stg=””]
The combination of these stresses changes the animal’s brain and hormonal system.
The animals then behave in ways similar to depressed humans.
The researchers divided the animals into four groups, each with slightly different treatments.
“Rats were assigned randomly into four groups: control, model, Xiao Yao San, and Prozac.”
Exposure to chronic stress caused a number of depressive behaviors in the experimental animals.
“The rats showed various depressive behaviors, such as poor appetite, low-pitched voice, lusterless fur, loose stool, and slow responsiveness.”
Xiao Yao San decreased the depressive behavior in the animals exposed to chronic stress.
“Xiao Yao San was effective in ameliorating the depressive-like behavior.”
Animals treated with the herbal remedy regained their appetite.
“Xiao Yao San treatment ameliorated the depressive behavior by improving the appetite and responsiveness of the rats.”
Xiao Yao San treatment also increased body weight.
(Depressed animals lose appetite.)
“Xiao Yao San significantly improved the body weight loss at two and three weeks.”
Chronic stress causes changes to hormone production in animals and humans. Researchers call this “HPA hyperactivity.”
Stress and depression are associated with an increase in corticosterone and urocortin.
“The up-regulated corticosterone and urocortin 2 levels demonstrated the existence of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis hyperactivity.”
These two stress hormones are good biological markers for depression.
Xiao Yao San lowered the levels of depression-related stress hormones.
“Xiao Yao San was effective in downregulating corticosteroid and urocortin.”
The researchers found a number of other positive biochemical changes.
One of those was in a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).
Stress and depression decrease brain-derived neurotrophic factor.
This protein is essential for healthy brain function.
Xiao Yao San increased the production of protective brain-derived neurotrophic factor.
“The expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor was elevated by Xiao Yao San.”
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor is also low in Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, epilepsy, and aging in general.
Exercise increases brain-derived neurotrophic factor – this is one of the reasons why exercise protects the brain.
The results show that Xiao Yao San can be effective in treating depressive behaviors.
“Xiao Yao San improves social isolation and chronic stress-induced depressive-like behavior.”
Importantly, Xiao Yao San also reverses some of the biological indicators of depression.
“Xiao Yao San ameliorates HPA hyperactivation by downregulating corticotropin-releasing hormone.”
The Chinese use Xiao Yao San very widely as a remedy.
“Xiao Yao San is the most commonly used formula in treatment of depressive mood disorders.”
People have been using it for an extraordinary amount of time (suggesting it may have a great safety profile…).
“It has been widely prescribed for about nine hundred years from the Song dynasty.”
You should always consult a healthcare practitioner about treating and diagnosing health-related problems.

What are these Japanese men doing?
As you can see from this chart, many of these men over 80 are having sex multiple times a week, or even every day.
This phenomenon of older Japanese men having so much sex is sweeping Japan and shaking the foundations of Japanese society.
Us Westerners don’t hear about all these Japanese men having so much sex. But they are talking about it a lot in Japan.
In fact, they call this the “quiet revolution” and it is crazy how much sex older Japanese men are getting.

Xiao Yao San is a popular traditional Chinese medicine formula, which is widely used as a mood enhancer. Especially taken for stress-related disorders, Xiao Yao San works by regulating the energetic functioning of specific organs in the body and boosting the energy meridians.
Chinese medicine states that the basic internal life force or "Chi" energy plays a major role in stabilizing the "psychological and physical imbalances" in the body. It focuses on the Liver "Chi" energy and soothes it, freeing any stuck up or depressed energy. It strengthens the spleens and improves blood flow and regulates the enzymes of the body that modulates stress. The core meridians or energy centers that Xiao Yao San works on, include the Lungs, Liver, the Spleens, Heart, and the Gall Bladder.
Available in dietary supplement form, Xiao Yao San has a variety of herbs in it. These include the ginger root, Peppermint, Licorice root, White peony root, Bupleurum and Poria, in a specific measure, that brings its healing properties to better engage health issues in the body.
Xiao Yao San is usually used to treat conditions like Anxiety, Depression, and Headaches. According to some studies Xiao Yao San has also been used for Migraine, Infertility, Weight loss, Premenstrual syndrome, and even Menstrual pain.
Xiao Yao San is also used to treat digestion issues like Irritable bowel syndrome and normal digestive disorders. In Chinese medicine, any trouble or disorder to the stomach or conditions that are related to the organs around the digestive system is caused by the "Liver chi" imbalance. Xiao Yao San helps to stabilize this "weak chi" energy and bring stability to the same. In China, Xiao Yao San along with generic antidepressant medications is used widely to treat Depression problems that in recent years have become more of an epidemic. According to national studies around 13 out of every 1000 people suffer from Depression and Mental Health Disorders in China. China has more than 70 million depression patients and Xiao Yao San is rapidly finding credibility as the magic cure with other alternative medications.
According to a study in the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, it was found that Xiao Yao San, helped to ease disorders related to Dyspepsia, which is usually marked by digestive issues. It regulates the movements of the food, as it passes from the stomach to the intestine and improves digestion.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Xiao Yao San has been used for Irritability and mood swing problems, and even for individuals who have sleep issues. It improves and heals any disorders that are related to Blood deficiencies and also helps to stabilize recurring food cravings. Many independent studies have found Xiao Yao San to be a powerful healer for conditions like whole body pain, excess exhaustion, irregular menstruation cycles, functional uterine bleeding, Chronic gastric problems, pelvic inflammatory disease and even for peptic ulcers.
But it is a good idea to actually consult a doctor before you used Xiao Yao San. This is because Xia Yao San can sometimes interact with certain medications. For those who might have existing disorders e.g Heartburn, taking Xiao Yao San might not be very prudent. One biggest advantage of Xia Yao San is that it does not have the side effects like the generic over the counter Anti-depressants that has become a huge part of the pill culture in the United States. Mental depression symptoms seem to improve in less time and there are fewer reports of any adverse side effects from the consumption of this natural concoction.
