Bones and erections boosted with this 1 mineral
Zinc is an important dietary mineral that most people don’t get enough of.
Zinc deficiency can also be exacerbated by digestive problems, which become increasingly more likely as people age.
Older people need to eat more zinc.
Animal researchers were looking into the effect of dietary zinc on bone health.
They found that zinc is essential for healthy bones.
The research also uncovered that zinc is a major player in controlling parathyroid hormone – which is central to bone metabolism.
High parathyroid hormone is also a major driver of prolactin.
Prolactin is an overlooked hormone that, in excess, can cause many problems.
Some issues caused by prolactin include loss of libido and erections problems.
The human research was carried out at the Tokyo University of Agriculture. This paper was published in the Journal of Nutritional Science and Vitaminology.
The researchers were investigating the role of zinc in bone health.
“We hypothesized that a zinc-deficient diet alters the mineral components of bones, as well as hormones related to bone remodeling, and negatively affects bone metabolism.”
The research was carried out in 4-week-old male rats. The experiment ran for 4 weeks.
Diets were:
- A zinc-adequate group (C, 30 ppm)
- A zinc-deficient group (ZD, 1 ppm)
- And a pair-fed group (PF, 30 ppm), which was pair-fed with the ZD group
Pair-fed means that the rats in that group were fed the same amount of food as the zinc-deficient group…
…even though their food did not contain the same amount of zinc.
This controls for the potential effects of food restriction…
…since the zinc-deficient group may consume less food due to the unpleasant taste of the zinc-deficient diet.
The researchers examined bone metabolism and density in the 3 groups over time.
Osteocalcin is a protein that builds bones.
It was reduced in zinc-deficient rodents, showing zinc’s essential role in bone health.
“Compared with the zinc-adequate and pair-fed groups, serum osteocalcin, a bone formation marker, was reduced in the zinc-deficient group.”
The researchers also looked at resorption – the breakdown of bone.
Bones dissolve more rapidly when the animals are zinc deficient.
“Deoxypyridinoline, a bone resorption marker, was increased in the zinc-deficient group compared to the zinc-adequate and pair-fed groups.”
You may know that calcium and magnesium are extremely important for bone health.
This research uncovered that zinc is necessary for the proper management of magnesium.
“The bone magnesium concentration was significantly higher in the zinc-deficient group than in the pair-fed and zinc-adequate groups.”
The researchers also looked at calcium and parathyroid hormone (PTH).
PTH is a hormone known to control the flow of calcium between the bones and the blood.
Higher levels of PTH are bad as this pulls calcium out of the bones where it becomes sequestered in soft tissue.
This is the cause of atherosclerosis, accelerated aging, and other diseases of calcification.
Parathyroid hormone levels were reduced by sufficient zinc in the diet. (Bad)
“The zinc-deficient group showed a reduction in serum calcium concentration along with an increase in serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) concentration.”
PTH increases prolactin, a hormone that decreases libido and destroys male sexual performance.
This is why zinc can help to keep your bones healthy and your erections strong.
Parathyroid hormone and prolactin are overlooked and yet extremely important hormones.
We need to keep both hormones low to maintain youthful, vigorous vitality and health.
Getting adequate zinc is essential to achieving this goal.
“Therefore, zinc deficiency is suspected to cause an increase in serum PTH concentration owing to an inability to maintain calcium homeostasis, resulting in bone fragility.”
You should always consult your healthcare practitioner for medical diagnosis and treatment guidance.
