Einstein’s upset stomach
Einstein is said to have a student who told him that his upset stomach “hates your theories.”
Well, there is some truth to this: A dull burning pain in the stomach can be an early sign of digestive problems. And the cure…
About 4% of the population suffers from painful stomach ulcers.
Ulcers can be a little irritating for some – for others, they can lead to bleeding.
The medical community believes that a few hundred thousand people die from peptic ulcers every year.
We already know that alcohol and painkillers cause stomach ulcers.
And there is plenty of evidence that the bacteria H. pylori is a major cause of stomach ulcers.
Powerful but risky prescription antibiotics can eradicate H. pylori and cure your stomach ulcers.
But there’s also a pretty effective natural remedy.
These researchers conducted this human trial at the Department of Medicine, Mosul General Teaching Hospital, Mosul, Iraq. They published their results in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology and Physiology.
The study recruited 38 people with properly diagnosed stomach ulcers.
[cmamad id=”20191″ align=”center” tabid=”display-desktop” mobid=”display-desktop” stg=””]
“A double‐blind clinical trial was carried out on thirty‐eight patients with symptomatic and endoscopically proven duodenal ulcer.”
The researchers designed this experiment to test the effect of mastic gum on stomach ulcers.
Mastic (AKA Arabic gum) is a resin. It comes from the mastic tree, which grows mainly on the Greek island of Chios.
The researchers gave 20 patients 1 gm of mastic per day for two weeks. They gave the other 18 patients a placebo.
“We compared the therapeutic responses to mastic and placebo given orally over a period of 2 weeks.”
The patients reported changes in their symptoms after two weeks.
People taking mastic gum reported greater improvement in their ulcers than those taking the placebo.
“Symptomatic relief was obtained in 80% of patients on mastic gum and in 50% of patients on placebo.”
Symptoms can wax and wane… The placebo effect can also affect perceptions of pain.
But a clinical examination of the stomach ulcers showed far greater improvement in the patients who actually had mastic gum than their perceived symptoms suggested.
An endoscope examination of stomach ulcers showed that mastic was over three times better than placebo.
“Endoscopically proven healing occurred in 70% of patients on mastic and only 22% patients on placebo.”
The authors concluded that the effect of mastic gum on stomach ulcers was highly significant.
AND the study didn’t report any side effects.
“Mastic was well tolerated and did not produce side effects.”
While there are effective antibiotics for treating stomach ulcers caused by H. pylori infection, those antibiotics carry a significant risk of side effects.
Mastic gum may be a great alternative for many people who do not want to risk the side effects of antibiotics.
People have been using this stuff for at least 2,500 years.
The ancient Greek doctor, Hippocrates, used mastic gum for digestive problems AND as a breath freshener.
These days, people often use mastic as a healthy alternative to chewing gum.
The authors of the study recommend further investigation into the effect of mastic gum on peptic ulcers.
“It is concluded that mastic has an ulcer-healing effect – but further studies are needed to establish its role in treating peptic ulcer.”
A letter to the editor of the New England Journal of Medicine provides a clue as to why mastic gum is very effective in treating stomach ulcers.
The letter explains the results of an experiment into the effect of mastic on H. pylori – the bacteria that causes most stomach ulcers.
They dissolved mastic in alcohol and they added different concentrations of mastic to Petri dishes infected with H. pylori.
All of the concentrations of mastic obliterated H. pylori in the experiment.
“Mastic killed the H. pylori strain and the six clinical isolates, reducing viable count by a factor of 1,000.”
The experiment shows that mastic has a devastating antibacterial effect on H. pylori.
“These results suggest that mastic has definite antibacterial activity against H. pylori.”
It seems likely that the people in the study above who responded positively to mastic gum were infected with H. pylori.
“This activity may at least partly explain the anti-peptic-ulcer properties of mastic.”
You should always consult a professional about treating and diagnosing health problems.
