Gentlemen, if you are looking to get healthy, strong, and handsome, you must eat REAL FOOD.

Eating food you can’t even understand the ingredient label for is not doing you any good.

And let me tell you something: those fortifications didn’t solve anything – in fact, they made it worse.

Today we’re focusing on folic acid fortification – and how it didn’t even resolve the folate deficiency in the U.S.

Folic acid has been added to cereal-grain products for over 20 years.

But why was this done?

One of the most well-known benefits of folate is its ability to reduce the risk of birth defects.

By fortifying cereal-grain products with folic acid, the hope was to improve the folate status of women of reproductive age…

…and reduce the incidence of these birth defects.

But you know what the problem is?

Folic acid is not a good version of folate.

It’s the synthetic version that can and does cause many problems, particularly in people with certain genetic variations.

Nevertheless, did fortification even give Americans high levels of this vitamin?

Let’s see today’s study.

This study was conducted at the National Center for Environmental Health, USA. It was published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The researchers looked at changes in folate levels in the US population from 1999 to 2016 after fortified cereal-grain products were introduced.

They analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

The study found that serum folate levels increased overall, but red blood cell folate levels did not change significantly.

“Serum folate geometric means increased from 2007-2010 to 2011-2016 in persons aged ≥1 y (38.7 compared with 40.6 nmol/L) and in women (35.3 compared with 37.0 nmol/L), whereas RBC folate showed no significant change”

Serum folate levels are NOT a good indicator of the body’s overall folate storage. RBC levels are better in this case.

And RBC levels didn’t go up – probably because our bodies can’t even use the synthetic version.

“RBC folate was significantly lower in all age groups (by ∼10-20%)”

The prevalence of folate insufficiency slightly decreased in women, but rates are still around 20%.

So, this fortification doesn’t seem like it worked.

Most Americans may still not be getting enough folate.

How to know if YOU are deficient in this vitamin?

It’s involved in DNA synthesis, red blood cell production, and many other processes in the body.

The symptoms of folate deficiency include

  • Paleness
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Mouth sores
  • Dizziness
  • Memory loss
