These 2 morning foods are helping men prevent cancer

There is no doubt that iron is an essential nutrient.

But very few people consume too little iron – and a lot of people get way too much.

Excess iron is a serious problem.

People who absorb too much iron through their gut can end up with deformed joints and severe liver disease.

That condition (hemochromatosis) is quite rare. But other diseases of excess iron are more common than you might think.

One common disease strongly linked to excess iron is cancer.

And there is good reason to believe that consuming foods like coffee and fruit, which are associated with a lower risk of cancer…

…have this cancer-lowering effect, in part by reducing the absorption of iron.

This review article was published in the Quarterly Journal of Medicine.

At the outset of “The War on Cancer,” there was a strong belief that cancer was largely a genetic disease.

The vast billions of dollars spent in this “War” have only shown that the genetic component to cancer is really quite minimal.

We now know that cancer is largely environmental – it depends on things like diet, stress and sleep.

And so, cancer is largely preventable – if you know what you’re doing.

“It is now well known that cancer might be considered in part to be a preventable disease, highly susceptible to modulation by dietary factors.”

Healthy foods like fruit and coffee are associated with a lower risk of cancer.

I believe there are many different reasons for this.

But researchers are trying to identify the compounds and the mechanisms by which these foods lower the risk of being diagnosed with cancer.

Many of these anticancer foods contain small compounds called polyphenols.

Data analysis of human dietary studies and animal experiments both show that polyphenols themselves are associated with a lower risk of developing cancer.

In fact, a number of animal experiments have shown that supplementing isolated polyphenols can lower cancer rates in groups of rats.

“Polyphenols, which are abundant in fruits, vegetables and drinks, have been shown to play a potential role as chemopreventive agents.”

This paper set out to ask the question of whether these foods lower the risk of developing cancer because the polyphenols reduce the absorption of iron.

You see, excessive iron greatly increases the risk of almost every type of cancer.

Iron has numerous roles whereby it aggravates inflammation which can shift the body toward cancer.

But the polyphenols in coffee and fruit can prevent the gut from absorbing toxic amounts of iron…

…meaning there is less iron in the body to cause inflammation.

“We suggest that some of the involved mechanisms might be related to inhibition of iron absorption by polyphenols present in the diet.”

These polyphenols do this in a number of ways…

…but primarily they attach themselves to iron in the gut and prevent it from being carried into the body proper.

“Polyphenols can combine with iron in the intestinal lumen making it unavailable for absorption.”

One study showed that a vegetable high in polyphenols could reduce the amount of iron absorbed in a meal by almost 90%.

“A vegetable with a high content of polyphenols reduced iron absorption from a meal of rice, fish and vegetables by almost 90%.

Coffee – a beverage loaded with polyphenols – has been shown to produce a dose-dependent reduction in iron.

1 cup weekly can reduce iron by 1%. That can add up to a lot if you drink a few cups a day.

“Among elderly participants in the Framingham Heart Study, each cup of coffee consumed per week was associated with a 1% lower serum ferritin, a good measure of body iron stores.”

Cancer researchers have shown that removing iron from the body using treatments can prevent, slow, or even reverse cancer in animal models.

The effective polyphenols on iron absorption is so potent that it has been suggested as a treatment for iron overload.

Iron overload can tip the body into a cancerous state.

“The consumption of polyphenol-containing beverages has been suggested as a useful strategy to reduce iron absorption in patients with iron overload disorders.”

One human study showed that reducing iron lowers the risk of cancer.

“In the feast study, examining the effects of reducing iron storage on cancer mortality, the risk of new cancer was significantly lower in the iron reduction group than in controls.”

That study tracked 2 groups of people over 4.5 years.

The reduction in iron was similar to that seen in other studies using polyphenol-rich drinks.

“The decrease of stored iron found in this study was similar to that reported with regular consumption of polyphenol rich tea with meals.”

There are innumerable different foods out there with high levels of various polyphenols.

But there are problems with many of these high polyphenol foods which are heavily marketed.

The simplest way to get significant amounts of polyphenols safely is to regularly consume coffee and fruit.

You can remove iron already in the body by blood donation.
