Some people believe that an active sex life is something to be reserved for young adults.

The idea that sex drive should naturally decline with age – and that erections problems are simply something that happens with time – is quite common.

But this is a dangerous belief.

Sex drive and erections quality are strong indicators of overall health.

Loss of libido and a failing sex life are not things that should be ignored…

Because the underlying problems can lead to life-threatening health problems such as cardiovascular disease.

These are the findings of a human study into the subject:

The research was compiled at the Taipei medical University in Taiwan. The results were published in the journal Aging Male.

The link between low testosterone and increased risk of cardiovascular disease is very well known.

“Testosterone deficiency increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.”

Low testosterone is also linked to low sex drive and erections problems.

This study was designed to look at the relationship between all of these factors – to see whether low sex drive and/or erections problems is associated with cardiovascular risk.

“We evaluated the effect of dysfunction, sexual frequency, and symptoms of low testosterone on cardiovascular disease risk.”

The researchers recruited almost 400 men with low testosterone between the ages of 45 and 74.

The men completed a number of different questionnaires. One of the questionnaires looked at the common signs of low testosterone.

Another questionnaire analyzed erections quality, libido, and sex life.

“The men were surveyed using the androgen deficiency in the ageing male and the International index of erectile function questionnaires.”

Cardiovascular disease risk was assessed using something called the Framingham risk score.

This scoring system was developed using data from one of the largest human studies ever carried out.

That study identified a number of different biomarkers for cardiovascular disease risk.

These risk factors include total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, and systolic blood pressure.

The researchers used all of this data to investigate the relationship between penile function, libido, testosterone, and cardiovascular disease risk.

Rockiness problems were strongly associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease over the next 10 years.

“Dysfunction severity was associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk.”

Men with mild erections problems are more than twice as likely to develop cardiovascular disease.

Moderate dysfunction was associated with more than 4 times increased cardiovascular risk.

Men with severe erections problems had an almost 13 times greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease in the next 10 years.

The researchers found similar patterns when they looked at the relationship between sex drive/libido and cardiovascular disease risk.

Men with low/no sex drive were three times more likely to develop cardiovascular disease.

“Loss of libido increased the risk of cardiovascular disease.”

Cardiovascular disease risk was also increased in men who had sex less frequently.

Having sex four or more times per month decreased the risk of cardiovascular disease by two thirds – compared with men having sex less than once a month.

Reported erections quality was also related to cardiovascular disease risk.

“Less strong erections significantly increased the risk (4x) of cardiovascular disease.”

The results were not entirely explained by testosterone levels. 

Testosterone is important, but there are other things at play too (such as high estrogen and cortisol).

Libido and erections are prime indicators of overall health in men of all ages – not something reserved for the early years.

“Dysfunction, decreased sexual frequency, and loss of libido predict a high 10-year cardiovascular disease risk in hypogonadal men.”
