As a health researcher, here’s why I smoke the occasional cigar
Occasionally, I enjoy a cigar.
That surprises a lot of people because I’m so into health and wellness.
But I’ve never found a shred of evidence that an occasional cigar is all that bad for you, and it may even be good for you.
Besides, I really like them!
But what is bad for you – and there is more and more evidence all the time – that’s e-cigarettes.
Now, they are NOT marketed as bad for you. Of course, they aren’t.
But it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the companies that manufacture them aren’t exactly forthcoming about the dangers.
They simply have too much money on the line.
Frankly, you should ALWAYS avoid e-cigarettes as if your life depends on it (because it very well might).
And pay special attention to this if you have kids – they are getting into these things in a big way.
E-cigarettes cause lung inflammation.
You’ll know this if you read my stuff on a regular basis: Out-of-control inflammation is one of the leading causes of chronic disease.
Inflammation is an important immune response, and it can help your body to heal from injury and hurt.
But when inflammation becomes chronic it can cause all kinds of diseases – such as asthma, bronchitis, and lung cancer.
And e-cigarettes CAUSE chronic inflammation in your lungs – especially if they are flavored.
Note: I wouldn’t bet on the unflavored varieties being particularly safe either.

The hype about e-cigarettes is that they are a “safe” alternative to regular cigarettes.
In reality, we don’t know much about how e-cigarettes affect the body…
But what we do know is scary as heck.
Many e-cigarettes come in flavors like cotton candy, mango smoothie, or crème brûlée.
These flavors are not made from actual “natural” ingredients.
They are made from chemicals.
And these chemicals do weird things when they’re combined with e-cigarette liquids.
“New research from Duke and Yale universities shows flavorings are transforming more than marketing. The chemical additives react to e-liquid, or e-juice, creating new compounds that could trigger irritation and inflammation when inhaled.”
The compounds that the flavor chemicals make when they react to e-liquid are acetals.
The problem with acetals is that they persist in the body and create irritants in the air pathways in your lungs.
Then these irritants blow up into an inflammatory response that can cause cascading health problems.
“…they create complex chemicals that are not disclosed to the user… When inhaled, these compounds will persist in the body for some time, activating irritant pathways. Over time, this mild irritation could cause an inflammatory response.”
This inflammatory response can lead to anything from colds and bronchitis to severe asthma and cancer.
In my opinion, it’s just not worth the risk.
And to make matters worse, there’s a myth out there that vaping at low temperatures will protect you from the dangers.
But it’s just not true.
Low-temperature vapes won’t protect you.
Lots of vaping advocates will tell you that using a low-temperature vape will protect you from the dangers of vaping.
But new research has shown that these aerosolized ingredients can be dangerous at any temperature.
“The new study, a collaboration between Duke and the Yale Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science, shows chemical changes occur even before the liquids are heated, so users may face some risks when inhaling the aerosolized ingredients at any temperature.”
The bottom line is that we don’t really know much about vapes and the effect they have on the human body.
What we do know is that when people vape, they’re pushing tiny particles into their lungs…
And those particles are likely to have an irritant effect on their lungs.
In addition, that irritation is not likely to stop at the lungs…
Often inflammation will cascade from the original source and to the rest of your body – causing “unrelated” health problems such as ED, obesity, and diabetes.
Personally, I stay well away from vapes and enjoy an occasional cigar instead.
(Of course, don’t suggest that alternative to any kids…)
Vapes are marketed as a “safe” alternative to traditional tobacco, but I’m calling BS.
They aren’t safe. Nobody should use them because they are filled with chemical compounds that get into the deepest parts of your lungs.
Don’t believe the hype.
