What I did with my colon
Hey, Matt Cook here, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can be debilitating for many men.
This is a term that’s used for both ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.
Both of these conditions come with terrible symptoms, like abdominal pain, fatigue, weight loss, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding.
They aren’t fun to live with and they can cause problems with social life and work.
If you have either type of IBD, then you know how painful and embarrassing it can be.
While there does seem to be a hereditary aspect to IBD…
…there is new research that shows that what you eat (or don’t eat) can greatly increase your risk of both types of IBD.
In a study published in the medical journal the BMJ, they linked IBD to eating what they call ultra-processed food.
A higher intake of ultra-processed food is associated with higher risk of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), finds a new study.
Ultra-processed food is very much like what it sounds like.
This is prepackaged food that is usually loaded with PUFA fats.
Ultra-processed foods include packaged baked goods and snacks, fizzy drinks, sugary cereals, ready meals containing food additives, and reconstituted meat and fish products — often containing high levels of added sugar, fat and salt, but lacking in vitamins and fiber.
These studies nearly always lump foods with sugar in with foods with PUFA fats, and I don’t think they should go together. I honestly haven’t found any problem with drinking an occasional Coke…
…but if you eat a box of crackers that is made with soy oil, that causes real problems over time.
Boxed crackers almost always contain PUFA fats, and PUFA fats cause chronic internal inflammation…
…which can certainly affect your bowel, as well as other parts of your body.
They are one of the main things that I teach men how to get rid of to have better health…
And PUFA fats are in most highly processed foods.
What the researchers found though was a DRAMATIC increase in the risk of IBD when people ate ultra processed food.
And the more of it they ate, the worse the association got.
For example, compared with less than one serving of ultra-processed food per day, they found an 82% increased risk of IBD among those who consumed five or more servings per day, and a 67% increased risk for 1-4 servings per day.This isn’t the first study I’ve seen that shows how bad these types of ultra processed foods are for your body. In general, it’s a good idea to stay away from them completely.
Now, I also want you to notice what is NOT associated with a higher chance of getting what is often painful and embarrassing IBD…
Non-processed foods that contain VERY LITTLE to no PUFA fats.
In contrast, intakes of white meat, red meat, dairy, starch, and fruit, vegetables, and legumes (such as peas, beans and lentils) were not associated with IBD.
Now, I’ve got to tell you that I’m not a big fan of lentils or legumes. I don’t think they are good for you at all.
But none of the things on the list above contain high amounts of PUFA fats – which I think is the REAL driver of diseases like IBS.
But generally speaking it is a VERY good idea to avoid ultra-processed foods and to eat lots of real food – especially ripe fruit.
What you eat can dramatically affect your health, so it’s worth it to make sure that you are eating the right things.
