I take this vitamin because it boosts my testosterone
Hey, Matt Cook here, and I’ve been researching this for a while now…
And I’m shocked to tell you that testosterone levels are lower than they have ever been.
And with this comes a whole host of psychological and physical problems for men.
Most of us are looking for ways to boost testosterone levels.
There are all sorts of exotic, and sometimes harmful, supplements out there which claim to increase testosterone levels.
Many herbal remedies do increase testosterone…
…but they can have overlooked side-effects, such as decreasing other male hormones like DHT.
The fact is that most guys are overlooking the simple, safe, and effective things.
For example, vitamin D supplements can increase testosterone levels by 25%.
The human research was carried out at the Medical University of Graz in Austria. The paper was published in Hormone and Metabolic Research.
Vitamin D is now well known for its effects on bone health and immune function.
But this nutrient is effects all throughout the body – the male reproductive system is a particular target for the sunshine vitamin.
Testosterone levels tend to go up in summertime – this has been noted for decades.
Vitamin D is obviously a potential reason for the summertime boost in testosterone levels.
“The male reproductive tract has been identified as a target tissue for vitamin D, and previous data suggest an association of vitamin D with testosterone levels in men.”
The authors of this study decided to carry out a controlled experiment to look at the effect of vitamin D on testosterone.
“We therefore aimed to evaluate whether vitamin D supplementation influences testosterone levels in men.”
The researchers recruited overweight men – men who tend to have lower testosterone. The men are also taking part in a diet experiment.
Decreasing caloric intake is one way to drop testosterone.
“Overweight men undergoing a weight reduction program who participated in a randomized controlled trial were analyzed for testosterone levels.”
The men were split into 2 groups, and 1 group received a moderate dose of vitamin D.
The other group did not take vitamin D supplements. The experiment ran for 1 year.
“Participants received either 3,000 IU vitamin D daily for 1 year (n = 31) or placebo (n =23).”
Unsurprisingly the average vitamin D levels at the outset were in the toilet. This is unfortunately “normal” these days.
“Initial vitamin D concentrations were in the deficiency range.”
Average testosterone levels were not much better – in the low end of normal – a bad place to be.
“Testosterone values were at the lower end of the reference range in both groups.”
Vitamin D supplementation at 3000 IUs a day was enough to significantly increase vitamin D levels over the course of the year.
“Vitamin D concentrations increased significantly by 53 nmol/l in the vitamin D group, but remained almost constant in the placebo group.”
This was associated with a significant increase in testosterone.
Vitamin D supplementation increased total testosterone by 25%.
“Compared to baseline values, a significant increase in total testosterone levels (from 10.7 to 13.4).”
There was a similar increase in bioactive testosterone and free testosterone in men taking vitamin D.
“There was also an increase in bioactive testosterone (from 5.2 to 6.2), and free testosterone levels (from 0.22 to 0.27) in the vitamin D supplemented group.”
Testosterone levels were still in the toilet in men who were taking the inactive placebo supplement.
“By contrast, there was no significant change in any testosterone measure in the placebo group.”
Simply optimizing your vitamin D levels with 3000 IUs per day can cause quite significant increases in testosterone levels.
“Our results suggest that vitamin D supplementation might increase testosterone levels. Further randomized controlled trials are warranted to confirm this hypothesis.”
Optimizing vitamin D is one of a number of simple, safe strategies you can use to optimize testosterone and overall male health.
