The 1 hormone that burns off stubborn fat
Obesity is caused by a number of stresses on the body, stresses which lower the metabolic rate.
Under this stress the body stops using energy and starts storing more fat. We become fat and tired.
Low testosterone is also common in men who are obese.
The testicles, which produce testosterone are damaged by the same metabolic stressors which cause obesity.
It can be a vicious cycle because testosterone is one of the hormones which help to keep us lean and muscular.
For long-term recovery from obesity you have to keep testosterone levels high.
In recent years it has become common for some experts to recommend fasting as a treatment for obesity.
One of the problems with this is the fact that fasting causes stress which prevents the testicles from producing testosterone in obese men.
Over time, fasting will make metabolic problems worse.
The human research was carried out at Department of Internal Medicine II, Södersjukhuset, Stockholm in Sweden. The paper was published in the journal Acta Endocrinologica.
The production of testosterone in the testicles is determined by a couple of hormones produced elsewhere in the body.
First gonadotropin releasing hormone triggers luteinizing hormone.
Then luteinizing hormone should trigger the production of testosterone in the testicles.
This study looked at the effect of gonadotropin-releasing hormone injections in a number of different groups of men under a few different conditions.
The researchers used a group of non-obese men and a group of obese men.
Both groups were put through to different experiments.
They were injected with gonadotropin-releasing hormone in the morning after an overnight fast.
Then, at a later date, they were injected with this hormone after a 56-hour fast.
The researchers then looked at the levels of luteinizing hormone under all 4 conditions.
Gonadotropin releasing hormone was effective at increasing luteinizing hormone in all of the studies.
Less was released in obese men who were fasting.
Luteinizing hormone is the signal to increase testosterone production in the testicles.
But fasting blocked testosterone production in response to luteinizing hormone in obese men.
“In obese men, gonadotropin releasing hormone increased luteinizing hormone but failed to affect the corresponding testosterone increase.”
To put it more simply – in obese men, fasting prevents the production of testosterone…
…even when the signal is sent to produce more testosterone.
Luteinizing hormone is sent from the pituitary gland. It travels through the body until it reaches the testicles.
This is called the pituitary-testicular axis.
When luteinizing hormone reaches the testicles it should trigger increased testosterone production.
But this does not happen in obese men when they are fasting.
“These results imply that food deprivation affects the pituitary testicular axis differently in obese and nonobese men.”
Fasting itself is a stress on the body. Stress causes the release of numerous different things which can harm the testicles.
Increasing stress by fasting in already stressed/obese men will lead to lower testosterone levels.
Testosterone is essential for a healthy metabolism. Testosterone is needed for a confident, focused mind.
Testosterone helps to build and maintain muscle mass – something which uses energy at rest – “burning calories” with no effort at all.
Fasting also increases cortisol which dissolves muscle.
These short-term effects of fasting in obese men should be alarming. But longer term effects will be even more severe.
As fasting lowers the resting metabolic rate, people gain more weight with less and less food.
The problem gets worse and worse, metabolically and hormonally.
The solution to diseases caused by stress is lowering stress – not increasing stress by starvation.
