Does bad blood sugar cause dementia?
Here’s the bad news…If you have diabetes your risk for dementia goes way up. But… that doesn’t mean that you should just give up.
Scientists are finding more evidence that could link Type 2 diabetes with Alzheimer’s disease, the most common cause of dementia. Several research studies following large groups over many years suggest that adults with Type 2 diabetes have a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s.
Because here’s the good news…
If you have diabetes you CAN do a lot to lower your risk of dementia. It’s not something that you need to be “resigned to.”
You have a lot of control over this!
In fact, I’ve seen many people completely get rid of all their diabetes symptoms using my Diabetes Transformation…
But that’s an article for another day.
Today, I want to focus on simple lifestyle adjustments you can make to dramatically lower your risk for dementia if you have diabetes.
In a study published by the American Academy of Neurology…
…researchers looked at the lifestyle of type 2 diabetes patients to see what factors helped them cut their risk of developing dementia later in life.
They followed this group of over 167,000 people for an average of 12 years, and they looked at the following lifestyle factors:
- No current smoking
- Moderate alcohol consumption
- 2.5 hours of moderate exercise a week or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise a week
- Eating a diet with more fruit and fewer processed meats
- Watching TV less than 4 hours a day
- Gathering with friends and family at least once a month
- Living with others
I want you to notice that there are a wide variety of things on this list. It’s not just diet and exercise.
The researchers gave one point to each item on the list.
For each participant, researchers calculated a healthy lifestyle score of zero to seven, with one point for each of seven healthy habits.
Following 2 or more of the habits led to a 4X decrease in the incidence of dementia.
People with diabetes who followed two or fewer of the seven healthy habits were four times more likely to develop dementia than people without diabetes who followed all seven healthy habits.
I want to point something out here that I think is important.
When you are working on improving your health and male function, it’s important that you start SOMEWHERE.
Don’t feel like you need to do everything all at once. Getting started is a huge victory and can yield significant results.
In this study it showed that every healthy lifestyle adjustment that people make is associated with an 11% decrease in the risk of dementia.
Each additional healthy habit people followed was associated with an 11% decreased risk of dementia. The association between healthy lifestyle score and dementia risk was not affected by treatments people took or how well they controlled their blood sugar.
Taking things one at a time can yield big (and often positively compounding) results.
Here’s the reality that I see every day helping men….
You don’t have to be defined by a particular diagnosis.
Whether that diagnosis is erections problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, or something else.
There are always steps that you can take to make your body healthier and your life better.
But it requires action. You have to step forward and do something for things to start to improve.
When you start doing that, magic starts to happen.
It’s really quite remarkable what can happen in your life when you take that first step.
