Men living near this line – less likely to get cancer?
Matt Cook here, and we all understand the importance of light for plant growth and health…
But sunlight is just as important for human health and gets very overlooked!
Sunlight triggers the production of vitamin D in the skin – with all the health benefits that brings.
Sunlight exposure also helps to regulate the natural daily cycles – which are essential for optimal health.
Light exposure has a potent effect on the production of many human hormones too.
And it’s not only the ultraviolet waves which are important…
Blue light in the morning sun helps to set our sleep wake cycle. The red light fraction is essential for metabolic health.
So, it’s no surprise then to see that people who get more sunlight exposure are less likely to have problems with chronic diseases like lung cancer.
The population research was carried out at the University of California San Diego. The findings were published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.
The research focused on UVB irradiance at the Earth’s surface.
UVB stands for ultraviolet B waves. This is the fraction of sunlight which causes the production of vitamin D in the skin.
The researchers estimated UVB exposure in 111 different countries.
These countries were selected because the researchers had access to high-quality data on lung cancer rates in these regions.
“The association of latitude and UVB with age-adjusted incidence of lung cancer in 111 countries was investigated.”
Many people think that sunlight causes cancer because of the stories we’ve heard about skin cancer over the last few decades.
But unless you get burned, sunlight isn’t going to do you any harm.
The first analysis looked at latitude.
The equator is at 0° of latitude – ignoring clouds and pollution, this part of the world gets the most sunlight.
As you go away from the equator, the degrees of latitude increase in both directions.
The North Pole has a latitude of 90° North and the South Pole is a latitude of 90° South.
So higher latitude means less sunlight, as it is further from the equator.
The researchers found that the further you get from the equator, the greater your risk of having lung cancer.
“Increasing latitude was positively related to incidents of lung cancer in men and women.”
The researchers also found that local conditions which affect UVB at the Earth’s surface also had a relationship with lung cancer.
Clouds and aerosols in the air block out some of the sunlight – they are associated with increasing lung cancer.
“There were positive associations with UVB absorbers like cloud cover and aerosol with lung cancer rates.”
In the analysis of UVB/sunlight exposure in 111 different countries…
…researchers found that lower UVB/sunlight exposure was linked to higher rates of lung cancer.
“Lower levels of UVB irradiance were independently associated with higher rates of lung cancer in 111 countries.”
The authors of the study seem to assume that this relationship depends on vitamins D.
The UVB portion of sunlight increases vitamin D levels.
And it’s likely that some of the anti-cancer effect comes from increased vitamin D levels.
But other light wavelengths which come from sunlight also help to regulate sleep patterns – which are very important for preventing cancer.
Sunlight also contains red and near infrared wavelengths which protect metabolic health.
Cancer is essentially a metabolic disease – so these wavelengths probably play a helpful role in preventing lung cancer too.
It is difficult to overstate the importance of sunlight exposure on the skin for human health.
It’s also important to remember that the benefits of sunlight exposure encompass far more than just increasing vitamin D levels…
