Fast-acting home remedy for hives and swelling
Matt Cook here, and I’ve had several men writing to me asking about itchiness and swelling.
They say their doctor hasn’t been able to help and they asked if I have a solution.
So…I’ve discovered that this is often called chronic urticaria, and it’s characterized by frequent hives and swelling episodes that last for weeks at a time.
Swelling is called angioedema. Angioedema involves swelling deeper within the skin and underlying tissues.
It’s most noticeable around the eyes, lips, tongue, and throat.
These conditions are increasingly common, and they have been linked to hypothyroidism.
In this study, researchers compared treatment with a high-quality antihistamine against treatment with thyroid hormones.
The researchers found that thyroid hormone treatment was more effective in the long term than treatment with antihistamines.
It’s yet another study that shows the role of thyroid hormones in the control of histamine, swelling, and inflammation.
The human research was conducted at Gülhane Military Medical Academy in Ankara, Turkey. This paper was published in the Journal of Dermatological Treatment.
The research was conducted in patients with thyroid autoimmunity and chronic urticaria or angioedema.
“Thyroid hormone replacement therapy has been discussed as a therapeutic in patients with chronic urticaria and/or angioedema and thyroid autoimmunity.”
Previous studies have linked thyroid problems to chronic urticaria and angioedema.
Later studies linked thyroid autoimmunity specifically with these conditions.
The researchers compared the effect of levothyroxine, also known as Synthroid or T4, against ketotifen in treating these conditions.
Ketotifen is an antihistamine that is very good for the short-term treatment of these symptoms.
“The efficacy of levothyroxine was investigated in patients with chronic urticaria and/or angioedema and thyroid autoimmunity by comparing it with ketotifen treatment.”
60 patients were divided into 2 groups.
One group was treated with an antihistamine while the other was given synthetic thyroid hormone.
“Patients in one group were treated with ketotifen, and the other with levothyroxine.”
The treatment lasted either 4, 6, or 8 weeks.
All the participants were assessed before and after treatment. The researchers also reassessed them a few weeks later.
“After completion of the treatment periods, the pre-and post-treatment symptom scores, onset time of ‘treatment’ effects, duration of symptom-free period, recurrence ratios, recurrence times and side effects were evaluated for each ‘treatment.’”
As expected, ketotifen was pretty good at suppressing symptoms of both conditions.
“Ketotifen treatment provided significant relief of symptoms.”
The researchers found that ketotifen had to be dosed very regularly.
“However, these beneficial effects were observed only in ongoing treatment. Symptoms reappeared in all patients during the ‘chemical’-free follow-up period.”
But in those given thyroid hormones, 60% had a complete improvement in their symptoms.
Another 10% had a partial improvement in their symptoms.
Moreover, those improvements persisted even when the thyroid hormone supplementation ceased.
“60% of patients were completely improved, 3 partially improved with levothyroxine treatment. Symptoms did not recur in the completely improved patients.“
The researchers concluded that supplemental thyroid hormones could benefit people with chronic urticaria and angioedema if they also have thyroid autoimmunity.
“Levothyroxine is an important and inexpensive treatment alternative in patients with chronic urticaria and/or angioedema and thyroid autoimmunity.”
The goal here is to correct thyroid hormone levels and reduce the inflammatory effect of TSH.
As such, this may not be a practical treatment for people with already optimal levels of thyroid hormones, but they’re unlikely to have these conditions anyway.
And as for the 30% of people who did not improve on levothyroxine…
…this may be because they may not convert levothyroxine (T4) into the active thyroid hormone (T3) very efficiently.
Supplementation with the active thyroid hormone or a combination of both may help resolve the issue in these people.
Thyroid hormones are potent substances.
They should not be taken by people who don’t know what they’re doing or are not under the supervision of a doctor who understands the process.
You can get into trouble inappropriately supplementing levothyroxine or the active thyroid hormone.
