Juggernaut bacteria born of the sewers
There is a huge push within the Medical Establishment to give patients fewer antibiotics because of antibiotic resistance developing in bacteria. This is a real problem.
Antibiotics are one of the miracles of modern health, and if they lose their effectiveness it puts human health at serious risk.
We could die from infections that are now treatable with a simple tablet.
Antibiotic resistance happens when bacteria develop traits that allow them to live when treated with antibiotics.
They are trying to survive, just like every other life form on earth.
And in trying to survive, they are developing ways to dodge what kills them.
Since the introduction of antibiotics in the clinics, disease causing bacteria have also started to accumulate more and more resistance genes in their DNA. This still ongoing process requires that genes, that were previously well anchored in the chromosome of certain bacterial species, first gain the ability to move around and eventually jump between species.
But it turns out that this resistance is developing – at least in part – in wastewater. NOT just in human use.
A new study from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden has found that wastewater is a potent environment for antibiotic resistance to evolve.
Wastewater contains residues of antibiotics that can favor the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
The study also found that wastewaters have unique characteristics…
Characteristics that allow resistance genes to start their journey from harmless bacteria to those that cause disease.
By studying DNA from thousands of samples from different environments, the researchers could identify where all the key components came together. To the authors’ surprise, it was not in the gut of humans or animals, it was in wastewaters sampled across the world.
This study found that antibiotic resistance isn’t arising in human guts – as previously thought.
They were surprised to find that wastewater was spawning antibiotic resistant bacteria!
This makes the environment a vast source for new resistance genes that one after the other acquire the ability to jump between species, to eventually end up in pathogens. The authors conclude that favoring this development by polluting the environment with antibiotics is not a good idea.
Another study shows that we can measure the types of antibiotic resistance found in a human population by measuring strains in wastewater.
The results show that the number of antibiotic resistance genes in wastewater corresponds with the number of such bacteria found in samples collected from patients in that region, as well as with overall antibiotic consumption in the area.
It just goes to show that “accepted” wisdom isn’t always 100% correct.
We’ve been told for years that taking antibiotics is the problem that’s causing antibiotic resistance…
…but it turns out that antibiotics in our wastewater could be the real problem.
“There is a lot of focus on reducing antibiotic use in humans and animals. This is of course important, but our study shows that we also need to pay attention to our waste streams, as this seems to be a place where new variants of antibiotic resistance could emerge,” concludes Fanny Berglund.
As a society, we have to stay on top of where antibiotic resistance is actually coming from and develop tools that can help combat it.
If we don’t, we’ll lose one of our most potent tools in human health.
