Watch out — this 1 mineral can drastically raise men’s blood pressure
Dietary minerals can have profound effects on blood vessels and blood pressure.
Magnesium, sodium, and calcium are well-known actors in this area.
But aside from people with kidney problems, few know about the effects of phosphate on blood pressure and the cardiovascular system.
I’ve previously reviewed articles showing that a higher calcium-to-phosphate ratio is better for blood pressure and blood vessel health.
Let’s look at research investigating the role of inorganic phosphate, a common food additive, on blood pressure.
This review paper was published in Current Opinion in Nephrology and Hypertension.
“The purpose of this study is to review the current literature related to the role of inorganic phosphate in the pathogenesis of hypertension.”
Inorganic phosphate is a processed form of the mineral which is added to foods to change color and texture or to retain moisture.
It is found in many fast foods, processed foods, deli meats, and canned and bottled drinks.
“Inorganic phosphate is commonly used as a flavor enhancer or preservative in processed food.”
The purpose of this article was to review several recent articles looking at research into the role of this food additive in high blood pressure.
“Recently an increasing number of publications have revealed a detrimental role of inorganic phosphate in promoting hypertension in otherwise healthy individuals.”
The researchers reviewed numerous animal experiments that showed this food additive increases blood pressure by numerous mechanisms.
“Animal experimental data indicate that dietary phosphate excess engages multiple mechanisms that promote hypertension.”
Phosphate, whether from natural foods or as a processed food additive, increases stress.
Increased stress activates the sympathetic nervous system – which increases blood pressure.
Phosphate also decreases the flexibility of the blood vessels.
This prevents them from expanding when blood volume increases – thereby causing hypertension.
It also prevents the lining of the blood vessels from relaxing and expanding – impairing endothelium–dependent vasodilation.
The researchers also found that excess phosphate causes the kidneys to absorb too much sodium.
The kidneys are centrally involved in blood pressure regulation, and excess phosphate causes sodium-related kidney injury.
“Excess phosphate causes overactivation of the sympathetic nervous system, increased vascular stiffness, impaired endothelium-dependent vasodilation, as well as increased renal sodium absorption or renal injury.”
The current research points towards the effect of phosphate on several hormones that affect blood pressure.
One of these is klotho – a fascinating substance that I have researched in great depth and written about in a newsletter.
Klotho is a substance that profoundly affects kidney health – this is probably why it’s so closely tied to blood pressure.
But klotho is also seen as a “fountain of youth” – because it has profound anti-aging effects.
In another newsletter, I detailed the spectacular pro-aging effects of high phosphate and low calcium in experimental animal research.
“These effects may be explained by direct effects of high extracellular phosphate levels, increase in phosphaturic hormones such as fibroblast growth factor 23, or downregulation of klotho, a transmembrane protein expressed in multiple organs which possess anti aging property.”
The calcium-to-phosphate ratio is critical. We need to obtain as much calcium as phosphate from our daily diet if possible.
This can be done by eating more calcium-rich foods like dairy and well-cooked, green leafy vegetables…
…while cutting back on high-phosphate foods like beans and meats.
But this assumes that we are not eating a significant amount of processed foods in our diet…
…because these foods often contain massive amounts of added “inorganic” phosphate.
“Dietary phosphate, particularly inorganic phosphate, is an emerging risk factor for hypertension which is ubiquitous in the western diet.”
The researchers called for high-quality human trials to look at phosphate’s effect on healthy people’s blood pressure.
I have no doubt they will find that reducing phosphate consumption will tend to lower blood pressure.
“Large randomized clinical trials are needed to determine if lowering dietary phosphate content constitutes an effective nonpharmacologic intervention for prevention and treatment of hypertension.”
