Why men are hornier in the summertime
You wouldn’t be surprised if I told you that sex drive goes up in the summer, would you?
Not at all.
There is research proving this – although you really wonder whether this research is necessary.
The research also shows that sex hormones like testosterone also increase in summer.
The question is – why?
It seems that vitamin D plays a large role.
Sunlight triggers the synthesis of vitamin D from cholesterol in the skin.
Vitamin D increases testosterone production in human cells, and also regulates other genes related to human reproduction.
The research shows that some of the summertime effects on libido and testosterone can be achieved by supplemental vitamin D.
The cell experiments were carried out at the Medical University of Graz in Austria. The paper was published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.
Vitamin D is well known for its effects on bone health and immune function.
Prior to this study, researchers were unsure about its effect on the production of steroids like testosterone in the testicles.
“The role of vitamin D in testicular steroidogenesis is new and deserves intensive research.
The researchers wanted to know whether the active form of vitamin D increases the production of testosterone.
“We hypothesize that vitamin D, especially D3 induces testosterone production and we intend to identify its impact on genes and pathways in testicular androgen regulation.”
They carried out their experiments by exposing human intestinal cells to different amounts of vitamin D.
“Human adult primary testicular cells were isolated, treated with vitamin D3, and their gene expression levels profiled by microarray analysis.”
They looked at the effects of vitamin D on testosterone and genes related to the reproductive system.
The work found an amazing 63 hormone-related genes which were controlled by vitamin D in human testicle cells.
“63 genes significantly are regulated by vitamin D3, including genes related to male androgen and vitamin D metabolism, mainly triggered by the vitamin D receptor.”
The summertime increase in libido may be largely due to the effect of vitamin D on genes.
It showed for the first time that vitamin D alone can significantly increase testosterone levels.
“Vitamin D3 led to significant changes in the expression profiles of reproductive genes and significantly increased testosterone synthesis in human testicular cell cultures.”
Some things to think about…
Most people do not get enough sunlight or take enough vitamin D.
They therefore do not have enough vitamin D for optimal health.
Common diseases like type II diabetes and obesity are characterized by low vitamin D and low testosterone.
