Is bacteria controlling your body temperature? How to tell
Body temperature can tell you a lot about your health – but more than one thing can affect temperature.
Generally, a higher normal body temperature is better.
It indicates better thyroid function, higher resting metabolism, and greater energy for life and regeneration.
Of course, a high temperature is known as a fever – usually indicative of bacterial infection.
Several recent studies have shown that bacteria can cause fever and decrease body temperature in otherwise healthy organisms.
The health of the gut is an overlooked factor when looking at health from the perspective of body temperature.
The human research was conducted at The University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor. This paper was published in The American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
Sepsis is a potentially fatal condition that results from the body’s response to bacterial infection.
There are many signs and symptoms, including rapid heart rate, rapid breathing, and fever.
Body temperature changes are a good indicator of who will and will not survive sepsis.
“Among patients with sepsis, variation in temperature trajectories predicts clinical outcomes.”
The authors of this study were interested in the reasons behind changes in body temperature over the last 150 years.
Body temperature in “healthy” people has reduced significantly in that time.
“In healthy individuals, normal body temperature is variable and has decreased consistently since the 1860s.”
The researchers carried out these experiments to see if any potential changes in good bacteria could explain human body temperature changes in the last century and a half.
“To establish and interrogate the role of the gut microbiome in calibrating body temperature.”
The researchers looked at changes in body temperature in hospital patients.
They also took samples of bacteria from the gastrointestinal system of these same individuals.
“We characterized gut microbiota in hospitalized patients using 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing.”
In another set of experiments, they injected bacterial endotoxin into mice.

Finally, experiments were carried out to change the bacterial populations of mice using antibiotics.
“We modeled sepsis using intraperitoneal LPS in mice and modulated the microbiome using antibiotics, germ-free, and gnotobiotic animals.”
Bacteria present in the gut of or patients admitted to the hospital could predict their body temperatures during their stay to a great degree!
“In a separate cohort of 116 hospitalized patients, we found that the composition of patients’ gut microbiota at admission predicted their temperature trajectories.”
As well as controlling human body temperature, the researchers found bacteria affected the body temperature of mice too.
Lab mice with no gut bacteria had different body temperature responses to sepsis.
“Compared with conventional mice, germ-free mice had reduced temperature loss during experimental sepsis.”
In normal mice, their body temperature responses to sepsis could be explained by the bacterial contents of their guts.
“Among conventional mice, heterogeneity of temperature response in sepsis was strongly explained by variation in gut microbiota.”
Using antibiotics or creating mice without gut bacteria led to animals with below-average body temperatures.
“Healthy germ-free and antibiotic-treated mice both had lower basal body temperatures compared with control animals.”
The researchers even identified a type of bacteria that seems to have a particularly potent effect on body temperatures in humans and rodents.
“The Lachnospiraceae family was consistently associated with temperature trajectories in hospitalized patients, experimental sepsis, and antibiotic-treated mice.”
Gut bacteria have a profound effect on our overall health. They impact everything from the brain to the testicles.
Bacteria have their most fundamental effects at the mitochondrial level – interfering with our energy production.
As such, it should be no surprise that bacteria can majorly affect body temperature, both in illness and health.
“The gut microbiome is a key modulator of body temperature variation in both health and critical illness and is thus a major, understudied target for modulating physiologic heterogeneity in sepsis.”
