Mitochondrial biogenesis
I’ve written a number of articles about niacinamide before – and it’s often mentioned in my newsletters.
It’s a very useful form of vitamin B3.
Niacinamide helps the body to produce energy – and this can have systemic benefits for your health.
But recent research shows that the benefits of niacinamide may be far more than anyone expected.
Niacinamide seems to increase mitochondrial biogenesis.
This means that the body produces more mitochondria – the energy-producing organelles of the cell.
Being able to produce more energy means that we would feel better and be leaner. And that’s what those animal experiments found.
Animals taking regular doses of niacinamide became much leaner and gained significantly more lean body mass.
The animal experiments were performed at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. The paper was published in The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry.
The authors of this study were working on the fundamental roots of obesity.
They were trying to solve the many problems which are triggered by excessive weight gain.
“Obesity is a global health challenge and is a major risk factor for diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, stroke and certain kinds of cancers.”
There has been a lot of work on the effect of niacinamide in the liver recently – but these researchers were interested in its effects on fat cells.
“Although the effects of niacinamide on liver metabolism and diseases were well documented, its effects on adipose tissue are yet to be characterized.”
They put rodents on a high-fat diet to make them sick and obese.
Some of the rodents were then given niacinamide in their drinking water.
They found improved blood sugar regulation in the animals consuming niacinamide – something which other studies have shown before.
But they also found that the animals taking regular doses of niacinamide were much leaner.
“Herein, we found that niacinamide supplementation significantly reduced fat mass and improved glucose tolerance in obese mice.”
Animals in a high-fat diet who are also taking niacinamide were almost 50% leaner.
What’s more, those animals had increased lean body mass (muscle and bone).
They had 40% more lean body mass and animals on the same diet which were not given niacinamide.
“Niacinamide also decreased fat mass by 47% as measured by MRI, while lean mass was increased by 1.4 fold.”
These are spectacular findings.
On further investigation, the authors may have discovered some of the reasons for these results.
“Niacinamide supplementation upregulates mitochondrial proteins and PPARα and PGC1α were both upregulated in adipose tissues.”
PPARα is involved in metabolizing fats in various different ways. It even increases beta oxidation – one of the best ways to lose fat.
PGC1α increases mitochondrial biogenesis.
Niacinamide, by increasing PGC1α, increases the number of energy-producing organelles in fat cells.
The animals consumed roughly the human equivalent dose of 250mg of niacinamide (assuming a 220lb human) per day.
But it may be important that the animals were considering niacinamide all throughout the day, rather than in 1 big dose.
Niacinamide may not last long in the body.
I’ve seen a number of reports where people claim that taking frequent small doses of niacinamide helped them lose weight…
…but that taking a large dose does nothing.
Vast amounts of money have been spent on research trying to find ways to increase mitochondrial biogenesis. Mitochondria are the basis of health.
This research shows that mitochondrial biogenesis can be increased by a cheap, over-the-counter supplement.
If niacinamide could be patented, this would be front page news.
“The results propose that niacinamide increased mitochondrial biogenesis in adipose tissue.”
Niacinamide has multiple roles in the process of biochemical energy generation inside the mitochondria too.
“Indeed, niacinamide treatment increased proteins related to mitochondrial functions including OXPHOS, fatty acid oxidation, and TCA cycle.”
It helps us to use fats and sugars more efficiently as energy – rather than storing them as body fat.
The study also showed that niacinamide increased glutathione.
This is the body’s natural antioxidant – protecting against rogue free electrons which can damage cells and DNA.
“Unexpectedly, we found that niacinamide also increased glucose derived amino acids to enhance glutathione synthesis for maintaining cellular redox homeostasis.”
Regular dosing of niacinamide could be a promising treatment for obesity…
…as well as a whole host of other chronic diseases which are caused by problems with the mitochondria.
“Taken together, our results demonstrated that niacinamide reprogramed cellular metabolism, enhanced adipose mitochondrial functions to ameliorate symptoms associated with obesity.”
