When doctors miss this cause of Afib

Atrial fibrillation is a type of irregular heart rhythm.

Often, the first time people experience atrial fibrillation they think they’re having a heart attack…

Though the 2 conditions are very different.

Atrial fibrillation can be associated with fainting, lightheadedness, shortness of breath and chest pain.

It’s also linked to an increased risk of heart failure, dementia, and stroke.

Because of this, doctors are eager to treat atrial fibrillation with treatments like tablets.

But the condition is very nonspecific, and the first-line treatments may be doing more harm than good.

One of the many causes of atrial fibrillation is hyperthyroidism – high levels of thyroid hormones.

This cause of atrial fibrillation often flies under the radar.

People with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation, or those on thyroid treatments, should pay close attention to their thyroid hormone labs…

Because high levels of thyroid hormones could be the cause of their atrial fibrillation.

The human research was performed at Gentofte University Hospital in Hellerup, Denmark. The findings were published in the British Medical Journal.

Thyroid hormones play perhaps the most important role in energetic metabolism.

These hormones are central to how our cells produce all of our body’s energy.

Because of this, low or high levels of thyroid hormones can interfere with the workings of any part of the body.

Low levels of thyroid hormones, something known as hypothyroidism…

Are well-known to cause cardiovascular disease and other serious problems.

High levels of thyroid hormones are less common – but just as dangerous.

This is called hyperthyroidism.

This study was carried out to see if there was any relationship between thyroid hormone levels and atrial fibrillation.

The researchers analyzed medical data from almost 600,000 people.

The medical records showed that one in 25 people have abnormal levels of thyroid hormones.

That is 4% of the population!

The majority of these people were categorized as “subclinical.”

This means they would have been overlooked by many doctors and other medical professionals.

The researchers found that TSH levels were clearly associated with atrial fibrillation.

TSH is a lab test which can indirectly tell us a lot about thyroid hormone levels.

TSH is a hormone which serves to trigger the production of thyroid hormones…

Lower TSH usually means higher thyroid hormone levels.

“The risk of atrial fibrillation was closely associated with thyroid activity, with a high risk and hyperthyroidism.”

Hyperthyroidism was inferred by low TSH labs.

“We found a TSH level dependent association with risk of atrial fibrillation across the spectrum of subclinical thyroid disease.”

People with hyperthyroidism – even subclinical hyperthyroidism were far more likely to be diagnosed with atrial fibrillation.

These people fall largely into 2 groups.

The first is those who are taking thyroid treatments for low thyroid function.

Taking slightly too much of these treatments could cause atrial fibrillation.

The second group is people who have recently become hyperthyroid due to thyroid disease or some other cause aside from treatments.

Anyone suffering from any new, unexplained medical condition should have full thyroid labs.

The study shows that this is clearly important for people with atrial fibrillation.

Always rule out thyroid problems first.

The researchers were able to identify the point at which hyperthyroidism, even subclinical, increases the risk of atrial fibrillation.

The risk of atrial fibrillation increases with a TSH below 0.2.

This is considered subclinical hyperthyroidism – a TSH range often thought to be completely harmless.

But for many people, TSH this low could trigger atrial fibrillation.

TSH is a rough guide, an indirect measure of your actual thyroid hormones.

You should always have both thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) tested alongside the TSH.

High T3 in particular can cause erratic heartbeats.

Sometimes the thyroid hormone labs can prove the TSH to be inaccurate.

Always look at the thyroid hormones themselves.
