Story-At-a-Glance

Matt Cook here, and many men focus on testosterone — and that’s great.

Because testosterone is important to men’s health and sexual function.

But there’s another hormone that’s just as important as testosterone, and it’s often overlooked…

In fact, supplementing with this one hormone can do more for men’s erections and libido than expensive TRT…

In the last few decades, the benefits of testosterone replacement therapy have become more widely known.

Optimizing testosterone levels in older or unhealthy men can produce great benefits — when done correctly.

Yet, testosterone is not the only male hormone. It has an even more powerful cousin — DHT.

Like testosterone, DHT levels drop with age and ill health.

And the benefits of supplementing DHT can be even more profound than testosterone replacement therapy.

This human research was carried out at the Bethesda Maryland and Baltimore City Hospitals.

The findings were published in the Journal of Gerontology.

This fascinating study was carried out on eight older men between the ages of 70 and 93 years.

The men were all living in hospitals or care homes for a period before the research started — and during the research period.

The doctors had collected a large number of lab tests and medical analysis from all the men over the previous years.

“The experiments were carried out on 8 males, aged 70 to 93 years, selected on the basis of a detailed history, physical examination, and a series of laboratory tests.”

The men were given supplemental DHT in the form of standalone injections every other day.

Much of the research was carried out in a metabolic ward — where the doctors were able to measure everything going in and out of the participants.

The participants were given different diets at different periods of the experiment. Sometimes high-protein, sometimes low-protein.

One of the things the researchers were interested in was the effect of DHT and protein intake on muscle mass…

A critical problem for older men where low muscle mass and weakness causes falls, leading to fractures.

“Except for a 10 day interval between the high-end low-protein phases of the experiment, all subjects lived on the metabolic ward under the supervision of specially trained nurses 24 hours a day.”

Aside from muscle mass, the researchers tracked common blood markers, to see if there are any obvious health problems caused by supplementing DHT.

They didn’t find any.

“Administration of DHT had no significant effect on calcium, protein or albumin. Neither was there any effect on phosphorus or alkaline phosphatase when the protein intake was high.”

The one thing the men did complain about initially was the pain of the intramuscular injection of DHT.

But as DHT levels increased, the men found that their pain tolerance increased dramatically.

“Tolerance of pain produced by the hormone developed in a surprising fashion after the first three injections.”

Older guys tend to eat too little.

And during the study, they were expected to eat more than they normally would.

Initially, this was a problem, with complaints of being overfed.

But within a week of DHT supplementation, healthy appetite was restored and the men were eating 2,600 kcal per day — enough to maintain healthy muscle and bone mass.

“By the end of the first week complaints about the size of the meals vanished and appetite returned.”

Perhaps the most inspiring results of this fantastic research was the effect on the mental well-being of the guys.

“A late result of hormone therapy was the changing mental attitude of the subject’s.”

The men became more positive in their mental attitude — they wanted to tell the nurses and doctors about improvements in their overall mood and outlook.

“Joviality increased, testimonials of well-being were volunteered, generalized euphoria seemed to seize some.”

Supplementation of DHT restored libido in these men who were between the ages of 70 and 93 years old!

“Interest in the female sex was frequently expressed, evidence of jealousy over favors rendered by the nursing staff developed and a decided change from the customary neutered attitude of the patient toward the nurses became apparent.”

These results really reinforce the idea that DHT is both masculinizing and antiaging in its effects.

In recent decades, some very dodgy research has ended up with DHT wrongly being labeled as a cause of prostate inflammation and even prostate cancer.

Superior research has shown that DHT actually protects against prostate problems.

This study did not reveal any detrimental changes in prostate health in older men with DHT supplementation.

“No changes in the prostate glands were noted and no symptomatology referable to the prostate gland developed.”

The final point to note in this study was an increase in nitrogen retention when the men supplemented DHT.

Nitrogen retention is an accurate but indirect measure of muscle mass.

Men who have greater nitrogen retention will be more able to maintain and build bigger muscles.

Increased nitrogen retention was noted with DHT with the greatest retention observed on the high-protein diet.”

In recent years, many men have seen great improvements in their health by optimizing testosterone.

Supplementing a small number of key hormones (including DHT) can be vastly superior to testosterone replacement therapy alone.
