How testosterone protects your lungs (weird but true)
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a progressive disease of the lungs.
It causes shortness of breath, cough and sputum production.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease used to be called chronic bronchitis or emphysema.
It affects nearly 200 million people worldwide.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease kills about 3 million people per year.
Some researchers believe that testosterone levels have an effect on the severity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
A recent study provided strong evidence of this relationship.
This human research was carried out at the Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires, Buenos aires, Argentina.
Results were published in the European Respiratory Journal.
This research was following up on evidence showing that low testosterone was more common in men with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
(Hypogonadism=Low testosterone.)
“The prevalence of hypogonadism in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients is higher than in the general population.”
The evidence from previous studies varies quite a bit.
“However, the association between testosterone levels and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease severity is controversial.”
So the researchers decided to do a study specifically into this question.
“We evaluated the association of testosterone levels with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease severity and estimated the prevalence of hypogonadism in men with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.”
The researchers recruited men with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and tested their testosterone levels.
“89 men and stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were included.”
The researchers looked at all of the best markers for testosterone.
“Hypogonadism was defined by clinical criteria and low testosterone levels, free testosterone levels or Bioavailable testosterone levels.”
The men were rated according to how severe their chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was.
This was done using the standard grading system called BODE.
The men were then categorized into two groups according to the severity of their symptoms.
“Testosterone levels were compared between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease severity categories, defined by the BODE index score.”
Men with more severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease symptoms had lower testosterone on average.
“Testosterone levels were lower in patients with high BODE index compared to low BODE.”
All of the testosterone tests showed lower T levels in men with more severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Low testosterone was up to 29% more common in men with or severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
“When hypogonadism was compared between high and low severity, the observed prevalence was 64% vs 33% according to free testosterone.”
Statistical analysis showed that the severity of obstructive pulmonary disease is strongly associated with low testosterone.
“After analysis we find a significant association between Bode index score and testosterone levels.”
As chronic obstructive pulmonary disease severity progresses the likelihood of low testosterone increases.
“A higher prevalence of hypogonadism which increases with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease severity was seen in men with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.”
Does chronic obstructive pulmonary disease cause low testosterone?
Or does low testosterone lead to more severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease?
The study doesn’t answer this question — but it doesn’t really matter.
Low testosterone causes all sorts of health problems.
Regardless of cause and effect here, men with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease should be tested for low testosterone.
Treating low testosterone will make men more healthy and resilient, regardless of the cause.
It’s likely that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease does lower testosterone.
We already know that breathing problems like sleep apnea cause lower testosterone levels.
Testosterone is essential for proper health in men. So lower testosterone could very likely accelerate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease too.
The lower your testosterone the more likely you are to have more severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
