True or false: milk can raise cholesterol?

There are a lot of myths out there about cholesterol and what makes it higher and what makes it lower.

Many of them are just complete bunk.

To make matters worse, if you present with any kind of high cholesterol you are likely to walk out with a script for cholesterol-lowering treatments…

And the doctor will have never even looked at the reasons that your cholesterol is high in the first place.

But that’s a different newsletter altogether. Today we’re going to bust up one of the big myths around cholesterol…

And that’s that milk can raise cholesterol levels.

This study that comes out of the University of Reading was published in the International Journal of Obesity.

The first thing to note about this study is that it’s HUGE. It looked at nearly 2 million people.

To account for inconsistencies in sampling size, ethnicity and other factors, the team conducted a meta-analysis of data in up to 1.9 million people and used the genetic approach to avoid confounding.

What they did was look at the genetic markers for being able to digest lactose.

That’s the part of milk that can give people stomach upset.

The researchers figured that people who can digest lactose well probably also drink more milk.

I think this is a fair assumption for the most part.

What they found is that people who drank more milk did not have high cholesterol.

In fact, they had lower cholesterol than non-milk drinkers!

“We found that among participants with a genetic variation that we associated with higher milk intake, they had higher BMI, body fat, but importantly had lower levels of good and bad cholesterol.

The researchers aren’t sure why drinking milk seems to lower cholesterol, just that it does.

What we do note in the study is that it remains unclear whether it is the fat content in dairy products that is contributing to the lower cholesterol levels or it is due to an unknown ‘milk factor’.

And the health benefits don’t end there, milk drinkers also had lower risks of cardiovascular events and lower risks of diabetes.

Further analysis of other large studies also suggests that those who regularly consumed milk had a 14% lower risk of coronary heart disease.

Even though the UK biobank data showed that those with the lactase genetic variation had 11% lower risk of type 2 diabetes.

I think this is a pretty big deal, and it’s one of the reasons that I personally drink up to a half a gallon of milk a day.

Now this study focuses on people who are able to easily digest lactose…

But the good news is that most people don’t have to be able to tolerate lactose in order to drink lots of milk.

I personally drink the Lactaid type of milk and it gives me no problems at all.

I’ve found that people sometimes have to try several brands to find one that works for them.

The bottom line is that despite the gurus out there shouting that “humans are the only animal that drinks another animal’s milk” as some kind of evidence that milk is bad for us…

Milk is actually very healthy!

In my courses, I recommend that you drink a lot of 1% milk if it’s possible.

The calcium and nutrients in milk are very good for you.

Honestly, I think doctors should probably be writing scripts for milk as a health tonic.
