The big risk with low carb diets that nobody mentions
Ketogenic diets are all the rage right now, with everybody telling you to watch your carbs and put butter into your coffee.
It’s SUPPOSED to be all steaks and green beans and easy-peasy.
But the truth about keto diets is quite a bit more sinister…
It’s understandable that these diets are so incredibly popular.
Because most people who go on a low-carb, high-protein diet WILL lose weight – at least for a little bit.
Maybe you’ve tried a keto diet yourself… Or you know people who have used the keto diet and dropped weight like a stone sinking to the bottom of a lake.
They do seem to work… Losing weight seems like a good thing.
I mean, aren’t we all supposed to maintain a healthy weight?
You get lots of compliments when you do it. And it feels great to lose weight.
But here’s the problem with all of the keto diets (paleo, keto, Atkins, and more…)
The weight loss is usually (almost always) temporary.
AND the health consequences can be severe. Here’s what Dr. Kim Williams – a leading cardiologist – is saying about ketogenic diets:
“No one should be doing a ketogenic diet – unless weight loss is more important than their health…”
That’s because ketogenic diets can KILL you.
And, yes, you read that right. They can 100% kill you…
As in strike you dead – it’s almost a 1 in 4 higher chance of dying.
“There’s only one slight problem: and that’s cardiovascular events. If you look at mortality… I remember pulling out the slide from 2007, that’s the first one I saw, large randomized trial looking at the ketogenic diet – and showing that it increased mortality by about 22 percent.”
22% increase in mortality. Wow, wow, wow. That is so NOT good.
And that’s not the worst of the studies. It was only the first one this cardiologist saw.
When you take the major studies and average them together, you get a 31% increase in mortality for people on a ketogenic diet.
I don’t know about you, but I think a 31% increase in dying is pretty darn turd-buckety myself.
“Don’t limit yourself to these two trials… Take every trial that’s ever been published across the world, do a meta-analysis – I think they had 13 or 16 trials in it – and average them all out… And the answer was 31 percent increase in mortality. So it’s not something people should do unless your weight loss is more important than your life.”
But don’t take this doctor’s memory as gospel…
Here’s a direct quote from the original study:
“Our systematic review and meta-analyses of worldwide reports suggested that low-carbohydrate diets were associated with a significantly higher risk of all-cause mortality in the long run. They also suggested that low-carbohydrate diets might not be protective – or harmful – in terms of CVD (cardiovascular disease) mortality and incidence.”
Since I don’t want to die younger than I have to, I don’t do keto anymore – ever, ever, ever.
It’s so freaking bad for the body. No thanks!
Now don’t get me wrong…
I got sucked into these type ultra-low carb ketogenic diets when I was younger.
And I lost weight and felt good for a bit.
But then I started feeling like crap, because this stuff is just BAD for your body. And your body knows it.
You know what’s good for your body?
Fruit.
The stuff that keto and all low-carb diets tell you to avoid like the plague.
Study after study shows that the more fruit you eat, the longer you are likely to live.
It does have to be ripe (if you can’t get it ripe, then bake the frozen kind with a little bit of sugar).
But it can be any kind of fruit you please.
And, weirdly enough, whole fruit is also likely to help you lose weight – as long as you don’t pair it with tons of fat.
So there you go. I never recommend any version of the keto diet. They are just terrible, awful bad news.
Eat loads of fruit instead.
Your body will thank you.

Prepare to have everything the so-called gurus have told you about sugar and fat be proven WRONG —
…and how to experience your teenage metabolism and teenage male “rockiness” even if you are over 60, over 70, even over 80 years old…
When we are young, our metabolisms are always running fast and hot.
That’s why as teenagers we are always full of energy and plenty warm, even on a cold night.
“No, Mom — I don’t NEED a jacket.” I used to say it all the time.
Well the reason we were so warm and full of energy as kids is because our metabolisms were burning SUGAR.
As scientists say, YOUTH is sugar-burning. That’s why we were in such good health with tons of energy.
The problem is that as we age, our metabolisms get slow and cold, and instead of burning sugar for energy, the body starts burning fat instead…
And believe it or not, this is a BAD thing.
You never want a metabolism that ONLY burns fat and not sugar.
Because that leads to health problems like diabetes, low testosterone, “rockiness” problems, obesity, more age-related diseases, even cancer…
But if you restore sugar burning to your metabolism, you can be sporting “rockiness” like you did as a teenager.
Really. It’s quite amazing. What a difference.
