Testosterone levels in men have been dropping precipitously in recent decades.

Science already knows about the association between low testosterone and obesity, depression, and increased mortality from all causes.

A recent sports science study showed that caffeine can quickly and dramatically increase testosterone.

These researchers published the results of their human study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research.

The scientists were interested in investigating the effects of caffeine gum on sports performance.

They recruited 14 men into this double-blind randomized study.

The recruits were trained athletes – professional Academy rugby union players. Players averaged 18 years of age and 220 lbs.

The researchers took blood samples to check lactate levels and they took saliva samples to check testosterone and cortisol levels.

After they took the baseline samples (before the experiment), the researchers gave all of the players normal (caffeine-free) chewing gum to chew on.

After chewing gum for five minutes, the players warmed up for another 20 minutes and then performed a series of sprint tests.

Each test consisted of a 40-meter sprint repeated six times. They rested for 20 seconds between each sprint.

Then the researchers gave the players more gum to chew.

Some of the players got gum with caffeine and some got normal gum to serve as a placebo for comparison.

This was during a 15-minute break period that was designed to simulate a half-time break.

After this break, the players completed a second sprint test.

The researchers repeated the blood and saliva tests before and after each sprint test.

The study found that salivary testosterone increased by a massive 70% after chewing caffeine gum.

“Following half-time, salivary testosterone increased by 70% in the caffeine group.”

This immediate and almost unbelievable increase in testosterone was not hampered by an increase in cortisol.

Increasing both cortisol and testosterone at the same time could lead to higher estrogen.

And that would be a bad result… But cortisol did not increase.

“Salivary cortisol remained unchanged.”

The authors argue that, in the context of sport, testosterone is associated with higher motivation.

And they believe that, over time, the increase in testosterone from caffeine could lead to improved sports performance.

“Practitioners may…choose to recommend caffeine gum between exercise due to the increases in testosterone observed – a variable associated with increased motivation and high-intensity exercise performance.”

Caffeine reaches peak blood concentrations in the blood between 1 and 3 hours after ingestion.

So the full beneficial effects of caffeine on testosterone may not have been fully realized during the shorter time period in which the study took place.

Many studies have shown:

  • Short bouts of exercise involving heavy weights = increase in T
  • Longer-duration exercise and intense cardio exercise = decrease in T

This caffeine gum intervention might be a useful way to protect T levels in men who do longer-duration or higher-intensity exercises.

The dose of caffeine used in this study was about 400 mg. That is quite a lot of caffeine – you would find this amount in about 4 or 5 cups of coffee.

This amount of caffeine could cause palpitations and panic attacks.

If you are going to dose yourself with caffeine like this, take it very seriously – test much smaller amounts first.

In recent years, many countries have reported massive decreases in testosterone levels – this decrease is linked to decreasing fertility and health in men.

Caffeine’s incredible ability to massively increase testosterone in a short period of time may be relevant to the health of the general population – not just for sports performance.

I don’t recommend taking high doses of caffeine unsupervised.
