Inflammatory cytokines draining your testosterone

I have written before about inflammation decreasing testosterone.

Inflammation, often caused by bad gut bacteria, travels around the body harming cells.

When the testicles become inflamed the cells which produce testosterone shutdown – this is how inflammation leads to low testosterone.

The research also shows that things move in the opposite direction too.

Numerous studies have shown that testosterone is an anti-inflammatory.

What is more, there are numerous chronic diseases like obesity and type II diabetes which are also characterized by low testosterone and high inflammation.

The review of human research was carried out at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Center in Malaysia. The paper was published in Aging Male.

Many of our problems come from bacteria produced in the gut. Suboptimal diets and other life stressors can lead to an explosion in bad bacteria.

These bad bacteria can escape from the gastrointestinal system when we experience a “leaky gut.”

The “leaky gut syndrome” is a list of problems which occur when these leaked gut bacteria trigger inflammation in the rest of the body.

This bacterial inflammation is a cause of type II diabetes, obesity, and low testosterone – among other things.

“Low testosterone levels are found to be associated with an increase in metabolic risk and systemic inflammation.”

Fat cells are a big source of inflammation.

They produce proteins called inflammatory cytokines which spread inflammation around the body.

This review concerned the potential effect of testosterone on information produced by fat cells.

“Since adipose tissue is a source of inflammatory cytokines, testosterone may regulate inflammation by acting on adipose tissue.”

The researchers analyzed previous studies looking at the role of testosterone in inflammation in both animals and humans.

“This review aimed to explore the role of testosterone in inflammation and its mechanism of action.”

The first finding was something that I already knew – that low testosterone is associated with increased inflammation.

“Both animal studies and human studies showed that low testosterone is associated with an increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines…”

In fact, previous experiments have shown that increased inflammation is a cause of low testosterone.

What is most enlightening about this review is the fact that the researchers highlight the ability of testosterone to suppress inflammation.

Giving testosterone to men or animals leads to decreased production of inflammatory proteins.

“… testosterone substitution reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines.”

This has been shown in numerous studies…

Including in men with various diseases which are at least partially triggered by both low testosterone and inflammation.

“The suppression of inflammation by testosterone was observed in patients with coronary artery disease, prostate cancer and diabetes mellitus.

Testosterone has a double effect on the inflammatory tone.

It increases anti-inflammatory proteins. Testosterone also decreases inflammatory proteins.

These proteins are independently linked to many modern chronic diseases.

“Testosterones anti-inflammatory effects were observed through the increase in anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10) and the decrease in pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α).”

There is a bidirectional relationship between testosterone and inflammatory diseases.

Inflammation decreases testosterone but supplemental testosterone can also help to decrease inflammation.

We already knew that other androgenic hormones like DHT and DHEA can be helpful for diseases which have a large inflammatory component.

This is also clearly true for testosterone too.

“More evidence is needed to validate the use of testosterone as a marker and in the management of chronic inflammatory diseases.”

Testosterone supplementation can be beneficial for many men – but it comes with risks and drawbacks.
